I've been reading this forums for the past several days now and finally descided that I need to subscribe! Of course I'm not posting just to tell you all that :D

Ok... Here's the problem. I CAN'T START MY TRUCK!!! Sorry for yelling but i'm about at the end of my leach. I was driving down the road just minding my own business and it cut off on me... I was only 1/8 mile from home so ol' faithful John Deere pulled me right home. I found out first thing that the LP was bad. I had one overnighted to be because the closest one to me was 150 miles away, one way! I have bleed and bleed and I still can't make it start. I scanned it and get no error codes. I know there are alot of possibilities but I really need some help! I have read all the LP related threads. I have bleed at both ports on the fuel filter, both banjo bolts, injection pump feed banjo, cracked #1,#3,#4 injection lines. No LUCK! I do geet fuel out the injection lines. Seems to me like it's enough to make it fire.

Thanks guys!

it should fire--but you may have to do like massdiesel says and crack them all---are you cracking the injector line nuts at the head and then cranking the engine---you should then wait to get fuel out of the lines and retighten each one until you got them all--chris

I tried just cracking the #3 to begin with. But then tried more after talking with some diesel techs. My plans for tonight are to take the line loose from the fuel filter (the one to the injection pump) and putting it into a jar of fuel and trying to bleed from there. This will atleast elimate the possibility of the INJ pump.

What I don't understand is why! The INJ pump should force most of the air out if i get atleast some fuel at the INJ lines at the head. I'm hoping that it's just air locked but I'm affraid it's dead... possibly the fuel vein pump in the VP-44.

Hold the pedal to the floor and crank for at most 20 seconds at a time. If you've bled the lines as much as you have, it should start. Otherwise its a bigger problem. Air will not cause that much trouble. I've had my system totally full of air and had little trouble... nothing like what you are seeing. And I've never ever cracked the injection lines at the head.

Update

Ok... I've cracked ALL the lines... #2 was a bear. . ened up taking air horn off and just bleeding it till i saw good amount of fuel and then put it back on. Still no go! I'm getting about 2 inches of fuel shooting out the cracked lines. I know i shouldn't have but i ran about a can of ether in it and still no go! Cracked #3 when running ether and fuel was coming out good. Don't know what the next step would be. I'm thinking cracking all the lines again and just cranking for HOURS! that's gotta do one of two things: get the air out... or BURN UP THE STARTER!

I'm going crazy here!

Make sure your connections back at the lift pump are tight, I had a problem when mine got replaced back 50k or so where it wouldn't start, ended up finding a connector at the lift pump that only needed a little nudge to be tight and it was enough to keep it from starting. It was allowing air in the system.

I have checked and re-checked the connections at the LP. I have nudged it alot :) I have cut down a wrench to get on the #2 line and bleed them all starting at #6 working forward. Still no fire. There HAS to be something holding me back here. I run the batteries down till they are almost dead with a charger / started hooked up to them!

I ran it with the lines cracked on some ether and you can tell a noticable difference in the fuel shooting out. I'm going to keep bleeding and bleeding! Cross your fingers!

I just had the same thing happen to me today, truck was running great, I drove it something like 20 to 25 miles and while turning into the parking lot at work the truck died..... I have no codes, I have fuel in the filter, and because of the lovely weather we have in the Northeast today I only loosened #1 injector line cranked the truck over for 20 / 30 seconds and nothing. tried switching fuel system relay, starter relay and still nothing, motor turns over but seems to be bouncing around more than usual. We will see what the dealer finds with it.

CTRam: Let me know what you find out. Still can't get mine to go! I get good fuel out of 1,3,4,5,6 nothing out of 2. Cranked it until the starter smokes and has discolored because of fuel burning off of it :D It blows my mind to think that it has air in it still. If it doesn't go tomorrow the pump is coming out and going to a bench test IF i can find one semi-local.

UPDATE

Ok guys... . i've been messing with this thing ... . gettting good fuel out of the inj lines. run it off of ether a little... now i'm getting the P0238 code! which i understand to be Map sensor. my question is ... will that cause it to not start? i can't imagine that it would... but at this point i might believe just about anything!

Won't Start

Hey there, if you've done all that in the bleeding process, you can find a local shop that has the tester we do at our shop. It replaces the wiring plug in to the back of the VP44 pump with the plug in from the tester box. You hook the tester to battery voltage and crank the engine. If it fires, then the problem is with the computer. If not, and you have fuel like you say all the way through to the injectors, then the problem is with the pump. Cummins makes this tester, and it sure comes in handy to diagnose problems. The tester only allow you to idle, or full throttle on the pump. It tests the basic pump operation sans PCM. Hope this helps!

Well I got my truck back just before work today, the only thing they found was a weak lift pump which I had them replace. Truck seems to run as strong if not stronger than before.

just a thought ... when mine would't start after al lift pump change, i cracked open 3 injector lines and bumed the starter( to set the 20 to 30 second lift pump run) about 30 times in a row, then cranked it over and as soon as the open injector lines sprayed some fuel it started to hit then lit off. it seems if your getting fuel to the injectors it should be hitting... maybe you got a bad batch of fuel. . the company my mom works for fueled a dump truck up with about 200 gallons of fuel and it died by the time they got it back. . they ended up draining the tank and it had about 50 gallons of water in it. . good luck
