Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Injectoin Pump

Truck won't start. Getting Error codes 1688, 1689 and 237 water in fuel light is on and I have a FASS and not using the stock filter. . Have been getting error code P0236 for a couple of weeks Figured I was going to need a new injection pump and ordered one from Piers today. Truck was running great so I told him I could wait a couple of weeks. Piers if you read these I need a pump as soon as you can get one to me. Anyway I am sitting here waiting for the tow truck to come and drag my truck home. Can anyone help me and confirm that this is an injection pump problem? I have never seen the po237 before and I think it has to do with the turbocharger. Also, I never got a warning, truck was running great just kept getting the p0236 code. Is there anything else I should be looking at? Truck has 93,000 miles. 2500 4X4. TST level 1, B&d torque converter and valve body, RV injectors, 4 inch exhaust, AFE intake filter. I hope it is only the injection pump, I ordered a high output form Piers. I figured if I had to change it why not add a little more ump. What makes the damn thing just die? No black smoke, no stumble, nothing..... figured I had some time. stupid me. .

there has been a rash of failed pumps lately.

Looks like acording to my notes , 1688 and 1689 are internal fuel injection pump control failure and no communication between ECm and Inj. pump module. 236 is MAP sensor to high to long.

237 is MAp sensor to low.

Thanks Houser. I was also getting a P0216. That was the one I got a few times over the last couple of weeks. Is it normal for them just to die like that with no warning? Run great, shut it down and wouldn't start. Just got it towed home.

That code means the VP is on its way out...

Add me to failed pump list

Add me to failing pumps. I have an 01 with a Banks Ottomind, Monday 4-26-04 got the error codes 1693 and 0216, read up on it and I assume that my VP44 is going away.



I took it to the dealer (Moss Motors in Riverside CA) after the engine light came on, they charged me $85 to tell me that because I pierced the injector pump control wire with the Banks kit they would not honor the 100k warranty.



This board is full of information, but the one question I have yet to receive the answer to is the one that counts: How can I get my VP44 replaced under warranty?

ALOT of guys get mad at that very question. "YOU modified it YOU bought it" or "WHY should the dealer pick up on something that YOU tampered with". Kinda and both the same but true. Believe you me Banks stuff VOIDS warrantees just like any other add on, and just because their products used to endorse the "Wont void warrantee" won't mean anything to a dealer. There are guys that have had em warr'd by the dealer and kudos to them. But Those dealers are a rare find indeed. In Fact Dodge sent out a TSB to the techs to watch out for pierced pumps and they know where to look too. So the answer to you question is in short : Ya can't. But ya never know How ever you have been red flagged allready.

This is my 2nd Dodge from the same dealer, first one was a gasser.



The service guy is real cool, he apologized up and down, gave me a copy of the TSB, and pointed out that I have a gold star by my name/VIN in the almighty Dodge/Cummins computer now.

So I'm aware that accoriding to D/C I'm liable, and to some degree I understand that, but the fact remains that in the advertising on which I based my decision to purchase Banks products there is a clear statement "Does not void any warranties".

So I reckon that if Cummins won't warranty it, Banks should eat it!



That said, life's too short as it is, I probably will end up footing the bill and chalking it up to "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. "



I will give it my best gentlemanly effort to fix it without any further cash outflow on my part.



I want to see how this gets resolved before I go on any kind of USPS- disgruntled employee inspired rampage

There is a clear nick left on the outer wire insulation by the installation of the Banks Ottomind. I didn't even bother to try and hide mine, left it hooked up because I was unaware of any potentioal warranty issues!



Wire that goes into the top of your injection pump, mounted on the left side of your engine near the front.

Sorry for the last post. I hit the wrong key and away it went. What I wanted to say was good luck with getting your pump replaced under warranty. I had 93,000 and didn't even try because of the upgrades I have> I used this as an excuse to get the high output pump from Piers. What really surprised me is that I did not get any mechanical warning that my pump was going out. I got the codes and figured I would wait until I got more proof. I didn't get any. I guess what I am trying to say is you are throwing the dice each time you dirve the truck that it is going to strand you. Not fun and embarrasing. A chevy with a duramax went by with a big smile on his face as mine was getting hooked up to be towed. Paul

My Dodge sits quietly in front of the shop until this is resolved. I've got other transpo, but I do appreciate the tip about being stranded.

I have AAA coverage, but why "throw the dice" in the first place.

What is this HO pump from Piers? Can I get a link to more info?
