VW diesel repair question

Hey guys:

I need to set the injectors in my 2 stroke Detroit Diesel (run the rack). The injectors are S 45's and I need to know what the clearance is for this injector (between the top of injector and the rocker arm. )

Any help is appreciated!

John

That's a pretty old unit with S45 Injectors. Took some looking, they are used in a 53 Series Detroit and are set at 1. 460. I ran 3-53T in a Ford, ran real good. Take care.

After engine serial # 4R37769 use a . 020" feeler gauge.

Thats all I could find, now the Detroit website is being a pain in the rear.

It has been years since I owned & opperated any "53" series Detroit's, but I think the post on 1. 460" is right. That is the distance from the top of the head casting beside the injector spring, to the top of the spring retainer in inches. There is a special tool with the distance built in for the different injectors in use, it is called a "pick". The overhead on a Detroit Diesel is very complex and must be set in sequence by the book. The air gap on the governor, the actual "rack", (the throttle mechanism on each injector), and the injector setting itself, is very important!! If not, poor performance is the result :{

Thats what i thought too, but when I tried a search on the Detroit website, all I could find was the . 020" feeler gauge thing.

As far as setting rack travel, I wouldn't be as concerend about poor performance, as I would be about the engine going to full fuel and over reving.

Make sure you have somthing to put over the air intake in case the engine trys to run away.

MKoth, I am not sure what the . 020" is for. That might be for the top of the stroke. The way I always set them was at the bottom of the stroke. The "pick", or timing tool is what I used. The 855 Cummins could be set either way also. Finger tight on the rocker arm at the top of the injector stroke, or 72 inch pounds at the bottom. The injector rack on the Detroit is complex in the fact that they all have to be exact with each other. And yes if you get them all screwed up they will run away, that is why all two stroke Detroits have the emergency shut off butterfly on the blower intake :)
