how long does it take to perform the test? do they use the drbII tool? what does the test specifically tell the tech? is it in written format that customer can get copy of to seek second opinion? thank-you for your help!

Depending on how good the tech is it only takes 15 minutes or so from the ones I've watched. The hook up the DRBIII and shut off each injector one at a time while the engine is running. When you shut off a working injector there is a noticeable miss from the engine and the rpm's drop a bit. If you shut off an injector and there is no change that is the bad one!

When I was having a problem with smoke I did an injector test of sorts. I unplugged one injector wiring harness at a time which of course turns off two injectors. This could help narrow a problem to within two cylinders if you want to do a little troubleshooting on your own and avoid the dealer.

If that works and you think you've narrowed something to within two cylinders, plug everything back in and pop the valve cover. Take a 8mm nut driver and disconnect one wire on one of the suspect injectors, then run the engine. Reattach the wire and do the other injector if necessary. Be careful to not let the loose wire touch anything, and especially you. . . I think it hits 90 volts. Also put the V/C back on when you go to fire it up so oil doesn't go everywhere.

can ecm be programmed back to original specs?

You lost me on that one! Do you mean turning the injectors back on? If so as soon as you pull the DRBIII of it would go back to normal. As soon as the tech stops the injector kill test the ecm is "normal". If your talking about the power enhancing downloaders I haveno experience with them other than what I read here.

i supposedly had the tsb for "white smoke" done(never could find where they put the modification label), but it did not work(mpg's and smoke got worse) so i took it back to have them check it out. when i drove truck back home it behaved like it did before i took in for tsb (ie the torque converter/shift pattern is erratic) it was shifting smoother after the reflash, so i wonder if they re-flashed back to original factory settings!
