At 4200 miles I complained about the knock in gear and the dealer said the #1 injector was out of spec at 84% so they replaced it. The knock is still there and they say all the injectors are between 90 & 100% which is above spec. So now they are calling the knock normal for these motors. Fuel mileage and power are better after the injector replacement.

Anyone know the technical details on what the % numbers represent?

Dan

When you hear a knock, how loud it is the knock. Is that the sympton of a bad injector. What should I look for to make sure my injectors are in good working order.

One injector down

I had the #1 injector replaced at 5K. Symptoms were hammering at idle, deteriorating starting quality if short tripped, white smoke on start if cranking more than 2 seconds. Still sounds like somebody is hammering inside the timing cover. First trip, mileage stayed roughly the same towing. Second trip mileage went up 2-2. 5mpg unloaded. Combo mileage is up about . 5 mpg. Get a little more smoke when kicked down at slow speeds. Starting is deteriorating again with extended cranking and intermittent white smoke. :(

My 03 started "knocking" at around 49000. Just turned 53000 and still haven't taken it into the dealer. Those guys scare me!

I am not found of the dealer either but a stuck injector can burn your engine up in a hurry. If you don't have gauges (pyrometer) to watch the heat get it to the dealer.

You can try a bottle of stanadyne first to see if that helps and keep your fuel filter clean.

I run Stanadyne all year more when it's cold and have 31K on a 10/2002 build 03 3500 no injector problem as of now.

04. 5 with 2500 miles on it. Been in the freindly dodge shop for 9 days. First they had to order the injector from Detroit, now they say that it will be coming out of Portland. At lease I have a nice new chevy loaner while I am waiting

Sorry about the vote for YES I didnt realize i was logged in. :{

Anyway, my truck has 33,000 miles on it with NO problems as of now.

I have an'03, HO, 6-sp, 4X4. Did an 8063 mile trip (Thunder in Muncie) this summer. Towards the end of the trip, with a 7000lb. trailer, I started noticing at idle and when you just start to accelerate (up to 1000rpm) a knocking sound. It sounds like one of the injectors is not doing the pilot injection thing. The one injector sounds like the diesel sound coming out of my old '91 Dodge/Cummins. I was going to take it back to the dealer when I got back home, to Phoenix, but, the knocking has quit. I'm afraid the dealer will tell me that "they can't fix what isn't broke". Does this sound like the problem you guy's have been having? Thanks! Joe.
