It's been a while since I've posted because I haven't had my truck for a whole month because someone decided to let their livestock runamuck and guess who was cruising down that stretch of highway on that sorry January 1st night?? Sorry thing trashed the entire front of my 03. Tie-rods, front tires, both fenders, the hood, fender wells, radiator, intercooler, trannycooler, fan, fan-clutch, headlights... you get the picture... . not a pretty one!! It was all destroyed in a split second, but hey, my sorry luck, it wasn't even totaled. That was the most depressing part of it for me. But onto my question. The engine has 160,000 miles on it and I've asked this question before and never really got a good answer. Not all the time but sometimes the truck, at idle, would drop in rpm's and KNOCK AND CLATTER REAL REAL BAD and then it would race up to around 1500 rpms and start the process all over again. The whole this is going on it is chugging black smoke out the tail pipe. The last time this happened I had it in the drive so I popped the hood and cracked the forward most injector line and the engine smoothed out and idled fine. Tightened it back and it went crazy again. Dealership has looked at four times already and always tells me "there's nothing wrong with it" because everytime the get the truck it runs fine. They flashed the ecm on it and more times than not it will idle down to around 1200 and stick there. If I slip the transmission in gear and ease out one the clutch it will go down to normal idle.

Is there ANYONE who has experienced any of this?? Please help me?

 Careful with that! There's a lot of pressure in those lines, even at idle.

I would suggest the possibility that the fuel rail pressure sensor has gone bad. It's just a thought. I'm not sure how to test that with a DRB-III, but I assume it can be done.

If the sensor was bad wouldn't the problem be continuous? The dealer claims that no sensors show to be at fault. Kyle at Extreme Diesel says it sounds like an injector problem. If I take a long trip the problem is very frequent but after sitting over night it clears up... sometimes. :(

Well, maybe, but let's face it - you could say the same thing about a bad injector. If it's bad, shouldn't it be bad all the time?

Electronics are fickle like that. The reason I suggested maybe fuel rail pressure sensor was the comment you made about cracking the #1 line. Like maybe the rail pressure sensor was reading too low (but not low enough to set a code) and the actual rail pressure was way too high. When you cracked the line it relieved the pressure and things returned to normal.

Maybe it's the high pressure fuel return solenoid? In other words, something that's keeping fuel pressure too high in the rail.

Just a thought...

What ever happened to the days of the horse and buggy :D . I'm not knocking the cummins engine because they are definitely one heck of a motor but if you pay attention to the 18-wheelers that are broke down on the side of the road with the hood folded over, about 85% are Cats, and they are newer model trucks with, you guessed it, computer controlled components. Dodge has also moved into that category too. Everything has to be computer controlled but what happens when one sensor goes bad..... 27 other things are affected as well. That 10 million dollar hand held job that the dealer supposedly knows how to read should tell them everything they need to know but after 5 failed attempts to fix my truck I still get the same answer. . "The computer says there is nothing wrong with it. "

I just don't want to end up spending a few thousand dollars replacing things that "might be bad". I'm just frustrated that no one around Waco within a 90 mile radius can tell whats wrong with my $620 a month means of transportation thats all.
