Have a friend with a 1998 5. 9L who is blowing out a lot of black smoke. Codes read:

Po 216 inj pump timing failure

Po234 turbo boost limit exceeded

code sets when injector pump timing is outside expected range for 5 seconds or longer.

circuit is monitored with engine speed above 300 rpms and timing command within certain window

Possible causes: faulty inj pump, fuel pump gear not aligned, restricted fuel filter or transfer pump inlet line

I don't have any more particulars of vehicle. What would be the best order to troubleshoot so as to save time and money? What do you think is the main culprit? Anyone else experience same problem?

Any, and all, advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Something simple to check before digging too deep. Be certain the mounting bolts didn't back off and allow the pump to move off the static timing mark.

First thing, perform fuel flow test. You should see 50 oz or better in 25 sec. If it passes... ... ... ... . vp44

my truck is throwing the same code. the only difference is that mine doesnt smoke. it just has now power. then just like flipping a switch, it has plenty of power. i have checked fuel pressure, vacuum in supply line, air in fuel. it had 12 psi when it did it. so i think i need a vp44. unfortunately my truck went out of warranty in november. mark

Going out of warantee is the clue!!

Mine has the 0216 code but I'm going todrive it till it won't go. It has been acting odd for a year. Some flat throttles, low power then, good stong power with heavy smoke.

I wish we had a inline pump with advance possible for the timing. Good things are oil lubed, accurate fuel metering, and a million miles of life.

I hate throw away pumps.

I put a new VP44 on my '99 at 136,000 miles. It started acting up at 84,000, but it was a poor quality *ealer that caused it not to be repaired under warranty. I was having a hard-start-when-warm condition. Never threw a code and is still running today with over 180,000 on the clock. :D
