Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) p7100 Adjustments....

Few days ago I had my VP44 changed due to an abrupt failure resulting in engine shutdown and no restart. Had the following codes 1688, P0254, P0602 and 1693. Got in the truck this morning after getting back from the shop yesterday and my fuel pressure light did not go out when I turned the key on, prior to starting. Still didn't go out after starting the engine. Put a direct reading gauge on and lift pump pressure is normal, so it is working. Must be a bad pressure switch for the light. I have a Smarty that is set to program 5 and in the past never really had a smoke issue. Now the truck surges at idle and there is lots of black smoke when taking off or accelerating from a low Rpm, say 12 to 1300. There is also a pronounced flat spot while the smoking is going on, which makes sense. No codes set in the ECM.

Went back to the stock settings, much better but still surges and smokes a little and now has a check engine light on, but there are no codes set.

Anyone have any ideas.

Thanks

Mike

Took the truck into the folks that rebuilt the VP 44 and had them do an analysis with their machine. There was a code in the RCM. All was fine with ECM and the pressure transmitter for my low fuel pressure light was bad, as I suspected. Truck is now fine with the Smarty in the stock position, but still smokes some in program 5. All remaned VP44's have new software to reflect the latest mods done to the pump by Bosch bulletins and new parts. So I now have a 27 pump configuration instead of the stock 011. I would think that these changes might have caused some of the issues and require getting used to. But the bottom line is, I think, that there was still air in the system and now it has worked it's way out and things are back to normal. One exception and that is that the lift pump does not run on initial key activation like it used to. Going to the dealer Monday for a check out and flash if necessary.

The newest lift pump flash will let it run for a split second just to prime it and then shuts off. It runs when the motor is on, but you probably wont notice it. As long as you have good fuel press it is running.
