Injector pump gear??????

Ok my dad has a stock 1993 cummins 1 ton 4x4 that has 180k on the clock. . The injector pump started to leak, so he had it replaced by a local mechanic... . After aprox 200 miles he went to crank it up and it locked up... He took it back to the mechanic, and turns out the gear on the injector pump was broke and the pin in the gear on the crankshaft was sheared. So now the gear needs to be replaced, and the pin also. . Why would the gear break??? The mechanic said that it is from fatigue and miles... . I just wanted your input on why something like this might occur. . Could it be from improper install???? Hmmm, I would hazard a guess the KDP (killer dowel pin) may have something to do with that. Check and make sure it is still in the cover.



Also check all the bolts in the front cover behind the cam and crank gear. They had a tendency to work loose.
 
I would say if it broke right after the pump change that either it was cracked while pulling it from the pump or the mechanic missed the keyway and forced it back on and cracked the gear. Just my opinion but I think a good guess.

Yes, the dowel pin can be a problem if it comes out. Do a search in this forum for KDP and you should find some info and pictures. Essentially it needs to be tabbed so it can never back out.



Also, all the bolts that hold the front cover to the block need to be chacked and loctite used if they are loose. Once the gear is off you have easy access to most of them.
 
Sounds like you need to get some of your own tools and do your own work, or find another mechanic, esp if this one is blaming a cracked injector pump gear on age and fatigue :-laf. I'd say installer error or KDP. GOnna do Mom's this week when I change the front seal.

kdp fix

Has anyone just staked the front housing around the dowel pin, it would prevent the pin from coming out just as much as a cover. plus you would not be adding more items to the front cover to fall out.
 
If there was enough force to crack the injector gear and shear the pin in the crank it would be a good ideal to check the pin in the cam gear as well.
