A friend of mine at work just bought a 2003 with 100k miles on it. THe injector pump promptly died soon after he took delivery. THe dealership replaced the pump (used car dealer) with a remanufactured unit. Now he says he smells diesel fuel in cab when ac is and even just when he walks by the truck outside, no puddles/drips below the truck though. Any ideas where to start diagnosing the source if we cant see anything obvious on the pump??

It could just be residue from the pump change. If they did not wash it after the pump change, there is residue and it will smell. You can't change a pump and not get diesel all over the place.

If the oder continues, then there is a leak. If there is no leak, the smell will eventually go away.

If there is much of a leak, you will be able to see it with the truck running.

CAUTION: VERY HIGH PRESSURE WHILE RUNNING. DO NOT ALLOW EXPOSURE TO DIESEL SPRAYING FROM A LEAK. PEOPLE HAVE DIED FROM DIESEL BEING INJECTED INTO THE SKIN UNDER HIGH PRESSURE. IT IS AN UGLY DEATH.
