Hey everyone, this question is coming from a friend with a 96. Which injector pump would that truck have on it. Is it the VP44? The dealer said it was shot and would be $4000 to replace. Any thoughts would be helpful. . Thanks in advance. . ROB

Thanks for the help guys. I ask him if they checked the lift pump and they said there was no problems there, plenty of fuel to the injection pump. The mechanic said these pump almost never fail, I'm not sure about these since I drive an 05. Any ideas on where to get a rebuilt or slighly modified pump for a reasonable price? Thanks again. . ROB

Anything you know about later model lift pumps does not apply to the one used on a '96. It's mechanical. If you are getting plenty of fuel to the injection pump with good pressure (18 PSI or above) then it may be the injection pump.

Thanks everyone, I found one over at USDIESELPARTS for $1000 in stock. I would like to hear what kind of pressure they were getting from the lift pump. Thanks again everyone. . ROB

I wonder if they made sure the timing was correct, had a good OF valve, governor lever isn't hanging up, or if shutdown lever is coming up all the way, etc. etc. P7100s do fail from time to time but there's a lot of other little things that may not be right. . . and more likely to be the problem. . . than with the P7100 itself.

The real thing to do is if they believe the pump is bad, take it off and have a reputable injection shop TEST it on a stand, instead of simply doing an R&R.

Thanks for the ideas. I haven't had a chance to talk with him today but I'm towing the truck to his house after work so I'll have a look at it then. Anything else I should look for?? Thanks again everyone. . ROB

Got some more info on the pump. Fuel is getting to the injection pump but we don't know what the pressure is yet. He also said the the fuel peddle was hard to press and then would get very soft. I haven't felt it yet but does anyone have any ideas on this one. I think tonight will be the night to tear into the truck so any thoughts would be great. . Thanks ROB

One more thing I forgot to ask, Someone said the lift pump was mechanical so where is it located on the motor? There's no pump in the fuel tank is that correct? Thanks ROB
