I noticed that my OEM injectors have quite a bit of black sooty buildup from the tip, to the bottom of the injector body. The stuff is hard to scrape off with a fingernail, but it will come off. The truck ran well, but is this normal for injectors? How long does it take for them to get that fouled looking? Is there a way to clean them/keep them clean while installed on the truck? What solvent should I use to clean them for storage? I use cleaner regularly, but didn't do so until around 38K miles. TIA

I know you can buy several diesel additives that help reduce that from happening. I use Power Diesel Service, You can buy a gallon at Wallmart for $9. 96, it lasts quite awhile.

mine too...

I have used PS cleaner in mine since it was new and at 32000miles I changed my injectors, and they looked the same.

Carbon build up on injectors is pretty normal. If it gets so bad that the injectors are hard to remove, you might have a problem. I've been wondering how all the BOMBed trucks do with the build up, since the BOMBed trucks smoke so much.

Use a quality additive and drive your truck at highway speeds often, to keep your engine clean.

I had the same question. I replaced my stock injectors with RVs at 35k (never used an additive) and they had some buildup. I just removed the RVs and put in BD Step 4s after another 8k (using Stanadyne with every tank) and they had the same buildup. I think it's pretty normal.

Just a thought, maybe all of that extra fuel with the bombed trucks gets burnt off of the injectors with all of that excess heat everyone is complaining of.

My stock injectors on the ETH looked the same, all cruddy with carbon build up, etc. When the step 3's came out to make room for the 5's, the step 3 injectors were as clean as can be, no build up at all on them. My only thought is that I did not have the e-brake when the stock injectors were in, and did a considerable amount of winter time idling, albeit with my homemade pedal pusher at 1200 rpms or so, maybe that was the cause.

Scott..... I,m sure with all the goodies in your truck, you must "clean it out" once in a while????... . that would certainly keep those injectors clean :D:D:D:D

When I replaced my stock injectors at 12,400 miles with the DD Stage 3's, the stock ones had about the same amount of buildup as you describe, John. I was using Power Service and Red Line 85+ off and on up until then, and it kind of spooked me, but I had never seen any used injectors before, so I had nothing to compare the buildup to. Since the Stage 3's have been in, I use either Red Line 85+ or Cummins injector cleaner every tankfull of fuel. Hoping that helps...
