High, I'm a new member to TDR was wondering if anyone could tell me the differences between DD3's and Bully dogs step'5 . I've heard some people say the step 5's make a little more power?? Is this true.

I was just wanting some other peoples opinions on witch injector would work best with the TST power max 3 box. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Do any members live in the Tx College Station area???

Thanks to all

Justin,

Welcome to the TDR. I think there is a member in Bryan but there are LOTS of them in Houston area. You should consider joining the Lone Star TDR and go to some of the Houston get-togethers. The Step 5 injectors are considerably more powerful than the DD III's. There has been a lot of discussion on them. Do a search and you should find lots of info. Fill out your signature and tell us about your truck.

Welcome to the TDR, this is the best place to get info for your truck and meet some real good people. Now for the bad news,

unless you have done some other mods to your truck, neither set of injectors would be acceptable. Alot depends on what you want from your truck. Is it a towing machine or a race truck. Have you up graded your fuel system, your turbo and your transmission?? The BD5's are big freaking injectors, they will casue lopey idle and smoke. The DD3's (which I have) are also big, but not as big a the step 5's. As far as I can tell they don't cause lopey idle, but they too smoke. Like I said above, it depends on what you want from your truck.

My suggestion to you is to get in contact with the Lone Star chapter and then spend about 3 months reading every post you can on injectors, fuel systems and turbos. Then Bomb's away.

Hey Justin. How do ya like the weather in here @ TDR ? :)

About injectors... see this thread. .

BD 5's I am wanting to get some,, but, that's after a South Bend Clutch, Bigger Turbo, and a more capable Fuel system, and somewhere in the BOMBing processs I'm putting twin 5" Chrome Stacks to put the smoke in the air instead of on other peoples cars and faces.

I might just go for twin turbo's, they aren't all that functional (twins) and still have lag, and are high maintanence, but the    Would be way worth it, and I hear they sound

Maybe I can meet you sometime, I'm in Laredo. Don't travel much, but I like Diesels enough, that sometimes I do travel.

P. S. Got off on a rabbit trail. Welcome to the TDR. .

I have had a power max 3 on for about 1 year. I mainly use my pick up for towing (but i like the power when Im not pulling). I pull dozers and track loaders some times grossing over 37,000. My next step is to get a South Bend Clutch soon. (factory one is just about shot) I maybe wrong, correct me if i am but i thought that the box that I have would supply enough fuel for the over sized injectors. I have messed with my turbo a little, able to get 40 psi of boost, that helped to lower my egts by about 100-150 degrees.

Any suggestions on a new lift pump? I think that mine is just about to go. Some times under a heavy load truck stumbles like it just completely shuts off fuel. I have checked and double-checked my connections on my box even connected the pump wire and box wire in two different places just to make sure. Doesn't do it to often, maybe twice a month (hard on equipment).

Thanks to all of you. I think that this site is great and all of the people on it. (One big diesel fraternity):D

Thanks

Justin

I have a PM3 with Bully dog step 4’s the step 5’s are truly race only. The fours are fine on the street but will lay down quite a smoke cloud on demand :D or I have found that to avoid smoke I can take off in first and keep the rpm’s up, or just take off real slow with a very light pedal. They will lope occasionally but not always. I have added a pusher pump at the tank and use all the stock lines AND fittings. It has 17PSI @ idle and 12 @ WOT.

The PM will more than supply you with the fuel needed to drive well out of the compressor map on your HX35 turbo, 40PSI @ WOT. I just recently put in the South Bend and can confirm the PM3 alone will slip the stock clutch. You would of course, need considerable upgrades, if you are running an auto.

I can still tow with the truck just fine, if I turn the PM3 down to 5 or 6. I can climb hills @ 30PSI and no more than 1050F with 5K behind me.

Justin, alot of great advice has already been given, I'll throw in my 2 cents as I have the BD 5's. With what you are hauling, I wouldn't even consider them. The egt's would be insane and the smoke, like a coal train on acid. I think step 2 injectors would be the most I would try in your situation.

As to the fueling, the box will provide only what your fueling system provides. First item you should take care of is the fuel flow. Either upgrade to the latest Carter pump or replace with an aftermarket pump, mounted near the fuel tank. Replace the stock banjo bolts with either modified banjo's ( available now at Geno's Garage, thanks to Ray T. ), or remove them completely and go with Aeroquip elbows and Weber adapters to lessen the inbound fuel restriction. Replace the OEM clutch with either a SBC or McCleod, then upgrade the injectors.

Right now, all my truck hauls is me. When I get the 5th wheel, the 5's are coming out and being replaced with step 3 injectors at the most, maybe even step 2's. The 5's are great for kicking a$$ and taking names, no way you want to haul the loads you have with them.

College Station...

Hey I'll be at the Hall of Fame Thursday night, driving over to see some friends.

I am leaning toward the DD just because of the repution. I have never heard anything bad about Bully Dog though.

Justin,

There was a discussion awhile back about the engine stumble you referred to. I think the concensus was that it is the electronics of the added boxes that causes this rather than a lift pump problem. Some of the people that I have talked to see good fuel pressure at the time of the stumble. I work with data on a daily basis and know that a momentary loss of sync in the bit stream between the mod. boxes and the stock boxes could cause this.
