Newbie here with a 2 month old truck:D that has been diagnosed with a bad injector:{ . The truck is sitting at the dealer waiting for an injector that could be a long time coming. Apparently, the part is on national backorder, and no one at the dealership has any feel for a when this thing could finally arrive. Anyone have any info on this national backorder thing?

In my line of work, I'm always a tap on the shoulder away from moving to another project that's sometimes thousands of miles away, and I'd hate to think of having to pull my travel trailer from California to Maine with my other vehicle (does anyone know where I can get a 2" hitch receiver for a mountain bike??? )

SD, sorry to hear of your problems have you thought about putting in some Don M injectors? If not sounds like nows the time

Call your local Cummins shop and give them the S/N of the engine and see what they can come up with. If they locate some, put the Service Manager in contact with them and see what can be done.

I'd take a minute and walk into the owners office of the dealership... . ask to chat with him/her... ... tell them your story and ask them to take apart a new truck or call the local service rep.....

Dave,

You might post the part number from the injector on here. I know Don has a few of the '03 injectors and he might be willing to part with one to keep you on the road if it is the same number as he has.

The word today is that the backordered injectors have been released (is that like "the check's in the mail"??). I'll chase down that part number in the event of the worst case scenario.

The frustrating thing is that the dealer I bought the truck from is 2700 miles away, so venting my spleen at the local guy is out. I just have to smile and politely let them know I'm not happy with DC for the inexcusable situation with the slow-to-arrive injectors. Some dunderhead at DC dropped the ball. Oo. However, there's nothing preventing my hammering DC. This isn't a 1934 Dodge, it's a 2004 Dodge, and DC sure as shootin' oughta have the parts to support their product before they put it on the market. :-{}

Thanks for your sympathy, suggestions, and offers of solutions.

Will provide updates as the plot sickens.

Make sure they have upgraded the order to V. O. R. (vehicle off road) . I have had to order some injectors that were on back order and took 10-12 days to get once I upgraded order to V. O. R.

What distinguishes the V. O. R. injector from whatever else might be coming down through channels?? Is it a matter of the part fitting or not fitting, or is it a performance issue, or is it some other difference of significance?

Tomorrow, I can ask them exactly what they ordered and at least know what is coming out the chute on this end. Before I pose the question to them, I would like to be able to intelligently follow up and not reveal how totally ignorant I am on the subject of injectors.  (I'm still quite green at this stuff, especially for an old dude). :D

Thanks for the heads up

I think he meant that V. O. R. signifies that your rig isn't driveable - needs injector NOW.

Ya know - I gave DC an earfull this morning when I called to check on my truck order:

Told them that since thay have had a year and a half to make this model (04. 5) you would think it wouldn't take 3 months anymore... . grrrrrrr

Wow, I'd have really been embarrassed if I'd said to the service manager,

"... and another thing--if those aren't V. O. R. injectors you're installing in my truck then everybody from your janitor all the way up to the DC CEO is going to hear about this gross incompetence. "

Thanks for the clarification. I've been assured that the order is of the highest priority, and for now I have no reason to disbelieve them.

Have you checked for yourself if there is any place else to get an injector. Get your engine serial number and call some cummins dealers and see if they might stock one. Just because its on backorder doesnt mean somebody doesnt already have some sitting on there shelf somewhere that your DC dealership doesnt know about. If you cant find any give me your engine serial number and Ill try. It doesnt hurt to try. Let me know.

On the newer engines Im not sure but there should be a small steel plate in there with about 8 digits on it. Look on the drivers side of the gear cover(I think). if you cant find it on there anywhere call the dealership that has the truck and ask them. If they cant give you your eng serial number they could at least tell you exactly where to look.

i don't think you need the serial number as much as you need the CPL number. that's what cummins will need to know to get parts for your specific engine.

I'll get both the serial number and the CPL number.
