Guys,
Not real sure about the smoke, but sometimes after changing injectors you may have to increase the idle screw to keep the idle speed where it used to be. I've changed injectors before and had to turn the idle screw in. I had lost about 100 rpm's after the injector swap. When the idle is to low on these engines, they do shake a little and seem to idle rough. Once I put a set of recons in a truck and it white/blue smoked and ran rough like it had a miss and when you were decelerating (like when gearing down to slow up on an off ramp or at a red light) it seemed like it had a jake brake on it. engie would lose rpm's fast like it was struggling. You may need to check the injectors and/or the sealing washers around them to be sure you don't have a bad injector or a leak.
All mechanics will tell you that there is a possibility of getting a bad injector in any of them new or recons. I am a stickler and will not have a truck that doesn't idle smoothly, this is a sign that something is wrong. If all you've changed is the injectors, I'd suspect a weak injector if you cannot find a leak etc. Try cracking the injector slines one at a time(be careful of fuel spray, it is under high pressure, possibility ofinjection into your skin or eyes). If you crack each line at the injector, do this one at a time and if each one you crack it should make the truck stumble or run worse. If you crack one and it does not affect the idle then that cylinder is suspect. It either has a weak injector, bad sealing washer, leak in fuel line, etc. , etc. IOf you find one that is suspect then swap the injector with another and see if the problem changes to the other cylinder, if so it is the injector if not is is something in the fuel delivery system. I am not a ceritified cummins mechanic (a quote from the assholes at the local cummins shop), but i ain't no fool either, I do repair alot of farm equipment and work on these trucks regularly. Hope this helps. If not let me know and we can discuss other alternatives.
