I have recently purchased a 2005 2500 4x4, 6spd, 180x miles. In July I took it on a 3000 mile trip pulling a 8x lb travel trailer. Truck ran good with exception of determining trans bad. When I got back I had reman trans installed, going again. Then #4 injector line busted. Installed new line from dodge (rip u off) dealer, and got tk going again. Noticed it smokes little on normal driving and considerably on acceleration. Nothing exceptional on normal driving, but can see it in right door mirror. I don't recall it smoking prior to injector line replacement. Then couple of days ago, it died when came to stop at light. cranked for few seconds, no start. cranked again and started. engine sounded/felt like it was surging when came to stop. drove 60 miles home with no problems. Yesterday, I went to get new filters (has second add-on) and it again died when stopped at intersection. It cranked back up ok. Drove another 50 miles home. I changed filters and canister filter looked like it needed changing.

Help. what should I look at, try, check, etc???

What is method of checking if injectors are good, bad, or going south?

AH641D , Is the lift pump on 05s in tank or where?

ck engine light has not come on. do I still ck for codes or wait for light?

Prairie dog, not sure what you refer to as crossover tubes.
New to this 3rd gen stuff. I also have a 96 2nd gen and different animal. just drove it to check out exhaust brake. I had just installed new vac pump for it. , and it died on me 2 times when coming to stop. cranks 3-5 seconds and starts back up. still some light smoke normal driving.
could there be air locked in that line??

The cross over tubes go between the injector line on the side of the head and the inj. inside the head. You have to loosen or remove the injector line at the head and put a socket or if you leave the line loosely attached, use a crows foot with a torque wrench to verify they're tightened correctly. It's a critical task and if done wrong will result in high return rates and cause some of the symptoms your seeing.
You don't have to worry about air stuck in the lines. The system takes care of that.

The scewdriver is resting on the cross over tube for the #4 inj. line.

prairiedog, thanks so much for info. I took #4 injector tube back off and torqued crossover tube to 30 ft lbs. , replaced line and it seems to run fine now. I took it up the road about 1half mile and back, did not die when stopping and does not appear to be smoking like it did. Again all this began when replaced busted #4 line on side of road. Will hook up to 8x lb trailer and test tomorrow. again, the info from experienced diesel people on here can't be appreciated enough.

Tq on the cross over tube is 37 ft lbs from the manual. Techs in the field are finding 41 ft lbs may be needed with used tubes along with a drop or 2 of blue loctite on threads.

These tubes need to be Tq'ed correctly and sealed or it messes up the HP side of the fuel system.

looking at the picture above, mine cracked just behind the nut where it attaches to the crossover tube, shown by the screwdriver. I probably drove it about 5 miles before discovering the leak which is very high pressure and soaked the engine compartment. It completely broke off when I loosened the nut. apparently I loosened the crossover tube when i took the nut off, causing the smoking and power problems described above. It was easier to take the line back off and use a socket to torque the crossover tube and then replace the line.
