Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Install lift pump idiot light

I have a 2002 Ram 2500 and want to install an idiot light for the lift pump. I just purchased this truck and new to owning a diesel engine. I was looking at the instructions for installing the BD kit and it indicates to remove the schrader valve at the inlet of the VP44 and thread in the banjo bolt that they include with kit. I didn't see the need to spend $60 for the kit when I should be able to buy the parts separately for a few dollars. Where can I get the banjo bolt or is there another way to hook up the pressure switch?

I suggest you install a gage, Unless you truly have a need for an 'idiot light' .

I second the fuel pressure gauge. It will tell you things the light can't.

Me? I have both, as the light comes with the AirDog!

I've got both also. The light snags your attention if you didn't happen to see the gauge when it dropped to zero psi.

The gauge though, is a good item to give you a heads up before trouble knocks on your door.

I personally think the light works fine, it will give you PLENTY of time to find the reason for it to come on before it becomes a problem. It most likely will start to flicker under hard acieration. You may, however, need a gage to trouble shoot the cause of the low pressure.

Reminds me of the alarm buzzer on my old Baliner with teh flahing lights and buzzers.



Good idea Gary. My dad did something similar to that a few years ago and it has saved him a few times. Specifically with the transfer tank.



I built him a fuel pump shutoff. This was done by tapping into the lead for the fuel gauge. By setting a small pot for the on and off values, we were able to setup the aux tank to go into auto mode and would refill the primary tank at 1/4 tank and shutoff at 3/4 tank. The pump also had another trigger that would not allow it to start if the aux tank was too low.



But back to the chime, we put a small square cheapie auto store unit in and it was wired to another pot. This was only powered when the fuel pump was on. The chime only activated if the fuel level became too high.



Once, the siphon effect overfilled the tank. This was a guard against that as he could stop and trip the siphon break if it didn't do it on it's own.

It seems like nobody answered the main question asked at the begining of this thread. You can buy the banjo bolt from Geno's and it will have the added benefit of having a larger I. D. You can buy your choice of indicator lights or LEDs from an auto parts store as well as all necessary wires and connectors. The only thing that might be difficult to source is a 5 psi normally closed pressure switch. I've looked and I can't find any that have a tight tolerance. So far, the only 5 psi normally closed pressure switches that I've found have had a plus or minus 3 psi tolerance... . and they cost $30 or more. After having done a little leg work, I decided that the BD kit really isn't such a bad deal. That said, I'm not personally running a low psi light. I've got a Juice with Attitude setup that will read realtime fuel psi as well as alert me with a tone and visual warning.
