Installed a Mopar/Jacobs exhaust brake today

It took me about 4-5 hours to install that includes a lunch break. The instructions are very good. Everything was included in the kit and labeled what part it was. I used snap ring pliers to get the cigar lighter out. Getting at the ECM was hard on my arms, kinda tight squeeze to get my big ole arms down there.

I took it for a test drive tonight and it really makes a difference without towing. I am going to Va in the morning and look forward to towing my 5er, I have to go through a tunnel so I will be able to share the great sound of my baby with others.

Now if I can find a "FOG HORN" to mount to her for when stupid people pull out in front of me and then putzs (go slow) along.

I have had my Jacobes e-brake for about a month now. Have pulled twice and it really makes a difference. You do have to remember to press the brake peddle just enough to light up the brake lights to give those behind you a heads up that you are slowing down. Don't know how I managed 40K+ miles with out the e-brake. This should be standard equipment from the factory.

I don't know if ya did this, but when I have installed a few of these, I remove the two bolts holding the fuel filter to the intake manifold, then push it up out of the way... . it makes it much easier to get to the ECM.



I still think the E Brake is my "most used" accessory!

Jacob's E-Brake

I have also installed the E-brake on my Ram an it works "Great" especially when I'am towing my fifth wheel,it'll save my truck brakes,especially when decending steep grades!

When I first read your post it didn't make any sense to me. BUT now that I have pulled with it I know what you mean. I was thinking of your post when I was slowing down and I find myself applying very little brake, enough for the brake lights to come on. I can not beleive how good this works.



By the way the sound in the tunnel was "Out Of The World". Higher RPM is great you get the rumble of a big rig, I do not care for the whistle at an idle.

Thanks but yes I moved the fuel filter out of the way. There is no way I would have been able to get at the ECM without moving it.



PS My VOID sticker on the ECM came off VERY easy and after I put my wire in pin 20 and I tighten the allen screw I re-installed the VOID sticker.

Another point of interest ( at least it was for me) The install instructions cover 981/2,99 and 2000 Rams. This made me not what to hook into the ECM till I knew that no damage would resault. The Dodge dealer and the Acc Hot Line could not tell me one way or the other. I ended up calling back and talked to parts and found out that the same part number is listed for 98 1/2, 99, 2000 and 2001.

I see this post was awarded 5 stars. How or why did this post receive this. I have not not seen this before.

e brake

I also have an e brake, but it is a pac brake and not the jacobs/mopar one. There actually isn't a whole lot of difference in them. I aslo couldn't stand the whistle that is created by the exhaust flow through the relief hole in the brake flap at idle so I cut into the yellow wire and installed a two speed switch on gear shift and after coming to a stop, I switch the brake off thereby eliminating the annoying whistle and turn it on as I accelerate from stop. Love it!!

I bought the B&D shifter switch and put it on the other night. I like this set up much better.

I strongly recommend that if you get a E Brake make sure you get a shifter mounted switch.

I have a BD exhaust brake on my truck in which I kinda like the whistle actually. I also agree that an exhaust brake is very nice to have if you do any kind of towing as I very rarely use my brake unless someone cuts me off.

One thing to remember... Don't forget to disconnect the batteries before messing with the plug at the ECM. Also, when pushing the new wire into Pin 20 on the connector, be very careful, as it is a pretty fragile part, and can be damaged easily.

The instructions are very complete and tell you a couple of times to disconnect the neg. bat. terminal to avoid damage to the ECM. I was vety concerned when it came to plugging into the ECM that my year model 2001 was not listed in the application years, I ended up calling DC for an answer of course I could not get through and ended up talking to a machine. I called the local Dodge dealer and found the same part number is used for the 98. 5, 99, 00, 01 year models.

Good to hear you got it all worked out!



Some early '98. 5 trucks will need the ECM re-programmed to have the throttle switch function work. My '98. 5 did not need to be re-programmed, but I do know some of them needed it.

E-Brake with Horton Fan Clutch

Look's like I'm going to have to add a relay controled by my E-Brake to activate my Horton Fan Clutch. I don't want the E-Brake to come on if the Horton is turned on, but I do want the Horton to come on with the E-Brake.
