Installed the Aero Turbine Muffler in mid August, and with enough miles on the RAM 3500, and mileage checked several times, I don't see any miles-per-gallon advantage in having the muffler. There is one exception: the sound. That is better, but I could do without the better sound for the price.

I also note that pickup is not as good with this muffler, as there seems to be a lag in power application I didn't notice with the OEM muffler. All in all, I should have stuck with the OEM.

The only positive installation was the Volant Air Filter.

I don't really believe the Aeroturbine pitch, that adding a restriction in the exhaust flow increases flow. That said, it does sound good.

If it does in fact flow better, your truck may be defueling due to your intake and exhaust mods. The turbo may be spooling too fast, so the truck defuels.

Easy to fix... Get a box that will do boost fooling. The Quadzilla Xzillaraider is my favorite. Even the towing module is a great box. You won't mind the intake and exhaust then.

Regarding the Volant intake, is it loud or quiet? Is there a replacement for the connection between the box and turbo? Does your filter stay dry in the rain?

The Volant filter install did not change the sound, not that I noticed, anyway. There is a nice pipe to connect the airbox to the turbo, and it was easy to install. I have not noticed a wet air filter. but it could as easily get mist wetted like the OEM filter. There is the main fender-well inlet, like the OEM filter box, and an opening in front and bottom of the box.

I did not close either of the openings, because they seem to be protected from any direct entry of rain, ext. , by the back side of the radiator guard and the wheel well. Mist could easily enter.

There is supposed to be another hose available which extends from the front or bottom of the Volant box to the right side of the radiator, but I can see that you must provide an access for the up-front, colder air to enter the hose and thus be available through the air filter. If there was rain, the air would be both moist and cooler.

What I would like to see is a product development engineer's report on the air intake and exhaust of the Cummings 600 engine, stating why they chose to use the OEM filter and exhaust and not some of the so-called better after-market ones. Was it expense or performance, or both? Perhaps we are all searching for a pot of gold in trying all these after-market items.

Keep us posted on the aeroturbine thing if you decide to get a box. I've heard some of the boxes do boost fueling even when they're off. Does anyone else know of a better muffler to put in instead of the aeroturbine? Just the muffler, I can't afford a whole new exhaust system and don't think I really need one. I just want to swap out the muffler.

One of the members, Craig I think, from Diesel performance parts, DPP, said he had direct replacement mufflers, but didn't say anything about them really or if they were a known brand or just a parts store sort of thing. I assume they would be, but when I looked on his site, all I could find was full systems. It may have changed since then, but I think they weren't a whole lot cheaper than the aeroturbine.

What I'd really like to see is a comparison of some mufflers in a direct replacement setup compared to the stock CFM's. Then we'd know what actually flows more! Maybe some sound files too so we can hear if the best flowing is to loud or not.

If it wasn't so loud, I might just straight pipe it!

RMarkey,

Here's the info you were asking about. The muffler we have is made by MBRP it's a direct replacement fo tthe 2004. 5 + Dodges, it will also fit a 2003/04 if you get a 3. 5 to 4. 0 adaptor as the intermediate pipe on a 2003/04 is 3. 5 inches while a 2004. 5+ is 4. 0. The muffler is made of 409 stainless like the rest of the Dodge system so you won't have any dissamiliar metals corrosion problmes, it has welded hangers that re use the stock Dodge rubber mounts and is very easy to install. The muffler is a straight thru design just like the other MBRP systems and is packed with a ceramic blanket and stainless steel wool. It has a great deep tone with more turbo whistle and on a truck that has the cat in place has a nearly stock volume level, unless you have your foot buried in the go pedal! We also have cat test pipes in 409 and aluminized if you want more sound volume. They aren't on our site but lots of members have purchased them and love the sound, easy install, quality and very good price. Call us if you have any questions etc.

I can vouch for Mark that his muffler replacement part is really great. I have an 05 that I put this on, as well as removing my CAT, and there is absolutely no droan in the cab at all. Outside, its louder than stock, but inside you can barely hear the change. I'm not sure what year truck you have, but my 05 has the tiny 9 cm exhaust housing, so maybe that muffles some of the noise. I love it and would do it again in a heart beat.

Mark Craig,

Sounds pretty good, but does the direct replacement require removing the stock muffler without any cutting? I'd rather require cutting. I've replaced just mufflers and getting the stock one out is a pain, they're clamped so tight! I've actually chained one to a tree and it took 3 good yanks to rip everything out and ended up being useless of course, but at least it's off!

Tennessee law recently changed now requires an emission test my 2004 Dodge RAM 3500 (1975 forward d-powered trucks). I have to get that done next month and will let you know how the muffler change effected my score. If it doesn't pass, I still have the OEM muffler.
