Problems with AutoMeter EGT gauge

How to keep cold pipe from blowing off?

Got this kit online and installed it this last weekend

First of all the filter adapter is OK and the relocate thing has 2 filter holders. . I bought 1 extra online not knowing I needed 2..... grr!... Found one that fit at checker. The combo of the 2 filters total more area than the regular filter and lets flow happen better I guess. The amount of oil I put in equals to 4 quarts. . 1 to replace what you lose when you take off the old one plus 3 more to get the level up to full.

Mounted the thing to the bolt on the battery. It still has a little play but is secure. There is 2 in and 2 out ports so they supply 2 plugs.

This is where I mounted the cooler. The Air Dam has a screen in front of ot so there will be airflow through the cooler.

Now here is where I need to get one more valve for winterizing... I bought one where the red handle is, that is the pressure side and when closed, it is to bypass the cooler for winter. . Right now the vise grip is making the oil go through the cooler til I get another valve to go in its place. The lower pic you can see the opening in the air-dam

They have several filters they recommend for the kit.

AC ... ... ... ... . PF2
Lee... ... ... ... . LF1
Motorcraft... . FL1A
Napa... ... ... ... 1515
purolator... ... . PER1a
WIX... ... ... ..... 51515

All in all the kit is pretty neat... . I added 2 valves, 2 "T"'s and several more clamps to do the winterizing bypass. . Had about 18" of hose left over... No leaks, pressure is good and I notice just after idling that the oil is cooler after exiting the radiator...

I don't know... other applications... different setup. . who knows... they show in instructions, 1 in, 1 out then to cooler then back to engine. . maybe to tun extra flow on a secodary circuit.

Eric,

Sorry but that dual filter housing is a terrible piece of work. I hate those aluminum cast pieces they break very easy and the fittings (threads) are a pain in the azz. I installed a couple years ago for a friend and never Had anything but trouble with them, kept leaking oil . the cast aluminum allows the oil to wick thru and leak. They either leak or crack from tightening them. I'm surprised you didn't go for a nicer piece like the STEEL dual filter assembly Amsoil offers. They are works of art and I have never had anyone say anything bad about them. The hoses and screw clamps you used are also on the week side. You have to remember you are dealing with the LIFE BLOOD of your engine and it needs to to treaded as such. I would preferred the use of AN-8 lines from Aeroquip or Earls, of the braided variety or at least their new push-on fittings and hose. That rubber hose is OK for heater hose but not engine oil routing. I know you tow alot and with a heavy toy hauler, the oil will sure be heated thoroughly and I can see the benefits of an oil cooler, just I would have installed better parts to assure no problems will arise.

I have to agree with Y-knot. I have to go back and repair too many poorly done upgrades. It is better to not add on than to add on parts that are inferrior to stock. If you blow one of those lines it will empty the crankcase before you come to a stop. I seriously doubt you were breaking down your oil from heat, you would be better off stock imho.

Well, we wil see, so far it has been on 1 week and I am towing to the local desert this weekend. . so far all the parts are clean and dry... the hose is thick and braided middle. . should be no problem there... if the cast stuff does fail or leak the I will piece stuff together better.

Yes I tow heavy. . have good power and a horton fan. . that still isn't enough to keep the engine from going to 215 deg just on a freeway onramp..... this cooler was meant to regulate the overall temp of oil and water especially when climbing with 26K.

the outside of the filter holder is smooth, I used thread tape on all threads, I checked even at cold startup with high pressure, it holds and is dry. . I agree with your thinking on better parts but this was a kit so we will see. .

I know you had good intension's, and towing that heavy trailer in the desert will and apparently does cause the truck to get hot. But think about it, aren't you just overworking the truck and simply asking to much of it. I think the combination toy hauler and flat bed trailer are excessive? My opinion.

The real problem with the addition of the oil cooler weather it leaks or not, is how it was installed. If you would have went to a quality shop and they installed that mess you would be furious, I know I WOULD HAVE THEM TAKE IT OFF AND LEAVE. What Bob4x4 and I was getting to was this, if the modification does not live up to the original standard on the truck, then it was not worth it and only brings the rest of the truck down with it to it's substandard level. Bob is also right, if one of those cheap hoses burst or rub against something and leak, you would not even know it till it was to late.

Also, when you install an option or aftermarket part, you want it to be of the same quality or better and when installed you want it to be serviceable and easy to use. Your filter assembly is neither, in fact mounting where you did you brought more heat into the engine compartment, and then mounted right next to the air intake... ... . how does that help, it doesn't you now managed to super heat the intake air even before it gets heated again by the turbo. Do you See what I mean here, I'm not putting you down just trying to explain why your new modifications are not good ones. Doing anything that increases the under hood temperatures in your case is very bad, the truck is already loaded to the gills and pulling it's guts out, don't make it work harder.

If you would have done this quality of work on your Buggy then fine, it would have still been bad workmanship and cheap parts, but you put it on a buggy that isn't very expense to rebuild and you do not depend on it for anything. But your truck is a different story, it has to safely take you there and get you back. One brake down on the road and good by trailer and who knows what. If your trip to the desert goes OK, and the temps drop good. get back home and straighten that mess out with good quality parts.

I believe the parts that are on the with poss exception on the clamps are good. . the filter holder is not aluminum I don't think. . too heavy for that. . Why would the hoses not be good for oil routing?. . is good for the pressure, the temp... . . what do those braided hoses have INSIDE?. . rubber?... . Not knocking them. . just don't need expensive stuff. .

One reason my truck heats up faster is when I rebuilt my engine, it was bored . 020 over so it heats the water faster. . Just running around town solo I notice the temp is like it was before the rebuild with this cooler.

thanks for the criticism and suggs...

the truck was heating up like this before the flat trailer. . I don't push too hard and I just want the engine to be cooler at the same work load...

I concede the clamps could be better to keep a tight clamp like a turbo spring clamp. . do they make those that small?. . these were tightened with a wrench so... If it does good on this trip and don't leak after that, I'm not going to mess with it. . I don't need "works of art" to filter my oil...

Just added up roughly what I would need to replace the hoses and fittings... I assume the 08 size is what I need. . to have socketless hose, ends, adapters to pipe thread, and such... over $200... !... I read that the aeroquip line has a special innertube so I guess it resists fuels and oils and such... . Maybe I'll upgrade the hoses sometime later. . right now I have bills and my trucking job might have fewer miles coming up on bids so I will have to wait and see for now...

When I first put this system on I half expected it to leak . . somewhere... . but it does OK right now. the hoses I have, have coded markings on them. . don't know if it is made for oil or not... should be... . will look again and try to find out.

Well, got back home sunday after going out to the desert. . my post in the towing section in the sand dunes and weigh beast thread shows what it weighed. . over 26 K... .

towed up a couple steep hills and coolant did go up high as before but this time with full A/C on and down to 45 mph it only got to 225 degrees and then it cooled a lot faster after the top. . turbo seemed to be a litle cooler on EGT but not much. . from a hard run, turbo cools much faster at high idle before shutdown, still no leaks and the pressure when hot was still 40.

I think the only thing that would make the cooler more efficient is if there was a small fan on the backside hooked to a thermo switch... just a thought...

So far I am glad did this. . will keep checking on components and see how they do... . so far, so good.

Looks like it will be a nice setup when you get the right hoses/connections in place. The increase in reliability to your rig will be well worth the extra 200 bucks.

Update on the cooler.

Just did a oil change and filled a 15 Qt container! So the increase in capacity helps the cooling. Where the vice grip was is a valve now and I turn one and turn the other and the cooler is blocked but it cuts back to the engine.

I took a hose off one of the lower valves by the the cooler and filter hoses to drain them so there is no trapped old oil. I closed the cooler off and filled the oil and it took 13 qts. When I open them later, if I do before spring, that is, I will need to top off then.

So far the hoses are holding up well and no bulges or leaks. I have been watching them. . So yeah with better hoses is better reliability but so far, it is OK.
