At 70k my ball joints on the driver's side were shot. After getting a quote from my local mechanic for $535 (one side), I decided to do it myself. Jeff Knight from the our local Mason-Dixon TDR chapter offer to help. Jeff, along w/ Ron Prothro (Wiredawg), and Larry Willard showed up to help out w/ the "little" project. First of all, It helps to have a left-handed person (Jeff) to beat on the front bolts of the bearing carrier. More on that later. Last night I removed the wheel, brake caliper, rotor, and axle nut and sprayed everything that looked like it needed it w/ penetrating oil. Fellow TDR member, ICEMAN, loaned me his 1" breaker bar and 1-13/16" socket to remove the axle nut. Pc. of cake (w/ a 4' cheater bar) so far. So, this morning, I loosen the bearing carrier bolts. Jeff showed up and we proceeded to beat on the ends of the bolts w/ a 12 pt. 5/8" socket w/ a 1-1/2" extention on it. I don't think Sears is going to warranty this one. LOL Jeff (left handed) beat on the 2 front bolts and I beat on the back bolts. 2 hours later, :--) w/ the help of Ron we finally got the bearing carrier(hub) off. This was two hours of solid beating. I'm not kidding. We pulled the axle out and got the ball joint press out to try and remove the ball joints. Of the course the ball joint press was not big enough. We got it to work, but there isn't enough space here to describe what it took. Let's just say that I think Sears will warranty the 1/2" rachet wrench that I will be bringing back to them. Can you said 4'cheater bar? We didn't have the right fittings to fit the press, so we cut a 2-1/2" pipe nipple to the right angle to remove the bottom ball joint . I used a miter saw w/ a steel cut off blade. Got the ball joints out and the new ones in. Never under-estimate the value of a 2lb. hammer. We used lots of anti-sieze to install everything. We replaced the u-joint while I had everything a part. The original was fine, but once I had everything a part, I wasn't going to go through this again. The new u-joint has a grease fitting too. Put everything back together and there was a definite inprovement in the steering department. Would I do it again? Well, let me tell you. $535 is a deal if they do the job correctly. After we moved my truck out of the garage, Wiredawg installed BD2s in Jeff's truck and Jeff left to work the midnight shift. Can't thank the guys enough. I owe them. Sorry for the long post, but I figured I owed the guys some acknowledgement. :D

Cheers

Thanks for the info.

Hi TMACC. I'm glad you put this up. It's nice to have a frame of reference when you go looking for repairs.

Do you think the same effort would be required if the truck were NOT a 4x4?

ball joints

2 wd dont have this problem. my truck has 230000kms. ball joints are like new. no work on front end except brakes and alignment. :D :D Oo. Oo. Oo.

Thanks FourBarR. Now I can have a happy, happy, joy, joy day, er, evening! Oo. Oo. Oo.

:D

(And I can anticipate spending my truck money are other fun things)

:D

Sorry to here it took you so long to get that thing broke loose.

Glad to see you had help and you saw an improvement.

I feel your pain that for shur. Maybe not the beating your brains out. I also had to do ball joints but i also had to do tie rod ends and track bar. Like you said when it went back together it had alot of never sieze. Alot better now.

The Hammer, Weapon of choice

Guys:

I have to say there was lots of banging, engineering, banging, rigging and banging going on. Then we banged some more. Boy howdy, this some job.

I gotta give Tom and Jeff credit: They worked out every challenge and came out on top. This job ain't for the mechanically challenged, the impatient or the weak.

One note: everytime we had a problem, we just wacked it with the hammer to get it right. don'e underestimate the value of beating something into submission.

We had fun and what else ya gonna do on cold, rainy day?

See ya'll!

LOL Truer words were never spoken. :D I was starting to lag after 1. 5 hrs of beating. Wiredawg stepped in to give me a break. What can we say about Jeff. He's an animal! He was the sole lefthanded person present to beat on the front bolts. Don't get me wrong, we're not neanderthals. We tried other solutions to beating the @#%* bolts, but you just can't beat a good BFH. No pun intended.

SKY, I didn't have an alignment problem, so I used OEM ball joints. I got them from magauto.com for about $160 a pr. That's one side.

I can't wait to do this project now. Thanks for the info even if it sounds frustrating as sin. I'll have to mentally prepare for this project. I may have to enlist you guys ( the PRO's ) to help out on this one. Won't be until late next year so you can breathe a sigh of relief.

Sounds like you guys had fun...

... I recently did my right side ball joints, and it was a task. I didn't know how easy that sealed bearing came apart, just put a hub puller on the rotor and ended up buying a $230 bearing:mad: . Needless to say everything got a good dose of anti-seize when it went back together. I did the ball joints and track-bar at the same time, and still needed a sky-jacker st. stabilizer to get the steering right(didn't have a problem til I put the 285's on). And a B. F. H. is a required tool on most any job;) along with a cold beer:D ... . Doug

Ramafid,

Heck, by that time we will have forgotten what a bear it was and be more than willing to help out. If you don't have a lift. Get some really good knee pads. Your going to be kneeling for a long time. I have the special tool require to beat on. :D Better get a back up though. Just in case. Maybe I'll post a picture of what it looked like afterwards. It was ugly.

Doug,

After reading about someone else pulling their hub apart I decide that I would use the BFH method. Ummmmm! Anti-sieze... necture of the mechanical gods. Beer... . necture of life. Can't work on your truck w/o either. We did wait till we had Jeff's injectors in before cracking one open though.
