wife got me a new turbo for the old 31 b-day!

no instructions came with this turbo. do i need a new down pipe? any special tools? hardware? any install advise/tips is appricated! thanks... . james :D

I helped install my sps66 and we used the stock downpipe. We had to bend the trans dipstick tube to make it work, and a couple of guys under the truck to muscle the exhaust around. We didn't remove the exhaust manifold either.

I got the SPS66 installed yesterday. It was a challenging install because of my suspension mods being in the way. Other than that, it isn't bad. On your truck, you should be able to use your factory cast iron elbow / downpipe. I had to replace mine because it was smaller the first half of '04. Have fun, you'll love it!!

damn return oil line!

i cant get the frekin back bolt in on the oil return line! i tried to put it on with the turbo off the manifold. front bolt no problem. back bolt :{ i'm having a beer now and bandiging up my nuckles. i hope i can get this thing on! been trying for 3 hours now!!! i just want to cry! i should be breaking it in now!!!!!!... . james

James,

You should have read everyones posts about intsalling the drain tube before re-installing the turbo.

It is next to impossible to get torqued, but it is possible.

Get some long thin wrenches. Or find a very short swivel socket/extension.

Once you get it to a point where you think it is "tight" enough; I would then use a grease marker or permanent marker and write a line to see later on if the bolt has backed off at all.

I purchased, but haven't installed yet, one of those flexible drain tube lines using an '04. 5 engine number to replace my solid '03 drain tube line that offsets and stretches the hose a bit. So it looks like I'll be experiencing this! It does look like I can get in there though with a wobbler socket. Maybe the SPS66 has more room? All I know was that my previous HTB2/62/12 was a SOB to install the drain tube without creative use of a ball peen hammer and shop air on the work bench. Good luck - I'm drinking a beer now for you!

Yeah the drain tube is a beeeaaatttchhhh. We used a short swivel socket and extension with the truck in the air, and a very long screw driver to hold the fitting in place while the bolt was started.

my phat shaft was the easiest turbo install i have ever done, my ol 40 was a PIA, but this one for some reason fell into place. i even installed the drain tube last, it is funny, it is like the turbo wanted to go on the truck.

That is good to hear. I should be getting one in the near future. The only thing I know i will need is an HX40 downpipe, Im hoping it will be easy enough
