I have tried removing the 3/4 inch plug for the boost probe behind the fuel filter and gave up. Am I being too gentle or afraid of breaking something? I used a 10 inch wrench handle and 1 inch piece of pipe ginivng me about a 15" lever arm. When the wrench started to bend noticeably I backed off. Any tricks or suggestions as to how to remove this plug would be appreciated.

Also, does anyone have experience removing the dash to install the Geno combination next to the stereo or would the pillar mount be easier? The instructions make it all souns so easy until you get a wrench on it.

Thanks for help.

The plug came out almost too easily on my
2001. Make sure you are trying to remove
the right one. Mine had some red sealing
compound around the threads, which was
visible before removing the plug. From
reading other posts, there seems to be a
plug further to the rear that has engine
coolant behind it. I am out of town right
now so I cannot look at my truck to look
at the plug and it has been months since I
installed my boost gauge.

I've never had my dash panel off so I cannot
help you with that.

Ed,

The plug on my 2001. 5 was tight but not as tight as the oil filter #ad
. I used a 14" 1/2" ratchet with a 6" extension to reach the plug. I climbed up on the truck to get a good angle of attack and it came out with a with a pretty good pull. Don't be afraid to pull on it pretty hard, you can't really hurt anything. You may want to try to remove the plug while the engine is warm, this may help a little. Make sure you take out the plug that is closest to the fuel filter, just in front of the MAP sensor, otherwise you will get wet.

Don't know about the dash panel.

Good Luck,
Dave D

I had a heck of a time getting mine out!! I broke 2 extensions as a matter of fact - sheared them right off. It did eventually come out though. I know this is stupid but make sure your loosening it not tightening it (righty tighty, lefty loosey).

It seems like that whole plastic trim piece that covers the whole part of the dash facing you just snaps on and off. I don't recall there being any screws holding it on. Ditto on the 3/4 pipe plug.

Once you're certain you're attacking an intake plug and not a water jacket plug, carefully apply nut-busting torque... emphasis on CAREFULLY, no shortage of things to damage and risk of injury. Some penetrating oil applied to the plug's threads while the motor is cold may help. If it is this tight it sounds like the plug in question didn't get the benefit of antisieze or some other thread treatment.

Good Luck

I've been coming to that conclusion Royal! I've always bought craftsmen tools figuring they were warrantied for life and they used to actually be good tools. Now it's almost all junk coming out of china. I had a socket wrench that snap on must have made for craftsman years ago, it eventually broke. This was after many years of hard service and the final blow was having a huge cheater bar on it (I was off road in the middle of no where and it was the only wrench I had). When I exchanged it I got the cheap china stuff in return. I've now come to the conclusion that the lifetime warranty is useless if you are standing there with a broken tool! So how do I hook up with a snap on truck to buy tools from?

ED, heat up the plug... ... ... ... .....
take the truck out and hammer it up twain harte grade the put the same equipment on the plug and it will probably come right out

obviously a torch is no good in that position, just get the engine good and hot
give that a whirl

Thanks for the responses. I will try the hot motor approach next. The plug does have some red goop on it which hopefully acts as both sealant and antiseize. As a point of info, I called Collins Diesel in Stockton who come highly recommended by several friends. Collins told me they no longer use the 3/4 inch plug but drill and tap the intake manifold instead. Said the plug was too hard to get at. Worst scenario would seem you have to remove the fuel filter and then you have all kinds of room. I don't like the drill and tap approach too much.

Excellent idea royal! This is a little off topic but, almost the best way to get snap-on is to call (877) 762-7662 and find out the name and number of your local dealer. Then if you're in a city you can talk to several of them and find out who is willing to deal. The guys that have been in business for a while hopefully own their inventory and paid cash for it thus getting a better deal from snap-on. These guys also should be more willing to discount the stuff. Tell them you're paying cash and want a good deal. It also helps if you're buying a good quantity of stuff. They can usually do the best deals on basic hand tools which is what most of us are interested in anyway.

After looking things over I am now of the opinion that drilling and tapping the intake manifold is the easiest way to go. By removing 4 easy to get at small bolts and disconnecting the felxible air inlet there is a metal tube that sits on top of th engine that can readily be removed, drilled, tapped, cleaned and reinstalled in short order.

Ed,no need to remove it. Just remove the air tube and stuff a clean lint free rag up into the manifold, you can then drill, tap and debur without fear of chips making their way up in to the intake. Remember to cover the end of the air tube also so nothing finds its way down there, plastic bag and rubber band works well.

ED !!!! STOP THE INSANITY!!!

I couldn't find the hole for the boost behind the fuel filter either so what I did was install a "T" fitting on the front of the turbo where the wastegate fits in. One side goes to your turbo boost gauge, the other to the waste gate. REALLY EASY!!
