Installing cab clearence lights?

How hard is it to install cab clearence lights (like the dually trucks) have? I have a neighbor that wants me to install them on his 06 Dodge.

If you buy the factory kit (~$80) it will come with a paper pattern to show you where to drill as well as there lenses and harness. There is a plug behind the passenger side pillar that has the correct wire to tap into. Takes a couple hours, not a bad job. Search my user name, I posted a thread about it years ago.

I bought the kit a couple years ago from dodge to put on my 05. The lights that it came with were different than the ones installed at the factory. Also, the pattern that the paper had on it was more pointed than rounded. What I'm trying to say is they didn't flow with the conture of the roofline like the factory installed ones do. Do a search for cab lights, there are some pictures on here some where of what I'm talking about.

I think the "kit" is a 2nd gen kit. not sure if there's a correct 3rd gen it avail

it's very easy... I did it on my '98. but I used a factory MOPAR kit that was made for that body style. I'm not convinced that they actually sell a kit that is the same as the OEM 3rd gens came from the factory

Be real careful, even the new style will leak if your not real careful. This is not the place to save money on aftermarket lights.

I did my cab lights with the "factory" kit. I noticed that the kit lights are the old style with the screws one each side (not on front and back like the new ones). I also noticed that the plastic anchors tended to spin in the roof holes making it difficult to tighten the screws fully. I had to use a pliers on some of the plastic anchors (with headliner lowered) in order to fully seal the lights. I can't wait until I have to replace a bulb...

I believe you can buy the new style lights individually and install. Of course, then you wouldn't have the paper template and wiring instructions.

Also, make sure to pick up a tube of clear silicone sealant. Fill in the holes for the wire as well as the where the screws go into the roof. This will prevent leaks for many years to come as well as many headaches. I installed the Recons and have had no leaks or problems for almost a year so far. It wasn't a hard install just a nervous one. Something about drilling holes in my roof bothered me. Just do what others have suggested and search around here for more tips and install help.
