I am installing a gauges set FP EGT Boost . From reading in here is it best to install the EGT probe pre turbo? The instruction say post.

Where is the best place to pickup the boost pressure?

Thank you Chuck

Alot of argument eiter way.

First I'll say my pyro is post turbo. There is a spot on the exhaust elbow intended for probe installation. In that location, you measure temp from all cyl's, but temps read lower and slower than at manifold. Also, there is about a . 5 in a billion chance the probe can break off and kill the turbo if its installed in the manifold. It is rare but can and does happen, and I have poor luck if any at all, so I figured i'd be that one chance failure and went with post turbo.

Pre turbo mounts show change in temp a little faster, and indicate a truer value of how hot the gas is leaving the cyl's. Problem is youve got a split manifold ( mine does, anyway) and would be reading either 1 2 3cyl's or 4 5 6 cyl's. Given the choice, I choose the 4 5 6 location, as the rear cyl's typically run a little warmer. But, you could have probs on the front half of the engine and not know untill its to late.

Seems like a lot of if, and, & but. I'll play the safe card and vote for post turbo.

Pre-turbo is probably most common, as OBert says it reacts the fastest. Do a little reading HERE for some more information that I gathered. From what I can tell, if you are not pushing the engine that hard the reaction time is not all that different from the two locations.

However, the temperature of the post EGT really depends upon the amount of boost generated. The higher the boost, the greater the differential between pre and post and vice versa. Also it takes much longer for the post EGT to cool off after shutdown.

For installing the boost gauge, I used a special bolt (with a hole in it) that replaces a bolt in the intake manifold. If you go that route, just be careful not to over torque it and snap it off in the hole. That could get ugly! :)

Go with the pre turbo mount, Piers has a good little chart for the best place to put it.

I would also use the boost bolt above, it was included with my gauges in the kit from Diesel Manor.
