lift pump install

On the 2001 I had, I did it from the top. So much easier once you move the filter housing out of the way. You have to be a contortionist if you're going to attempt to do it from the bottom.

Here is what I do to change lift pumps.

Depending on how long your arms are (I'm 6'4" in height)

Go to Sears and get you a set of short gear box wrenches.

You'll need a 10mm fuel line mount, 13mm lift pump mounting nuts,17mm banjo fittings.

Get your knees on the bumper and work from the top of the engine, this works and you don't have to move anything out of the way. (maybe a dipstick or wire harness)

Did mine from the left side of the truck. I'm 6'3" and my hamstrings were a little stretched but I went in from the top and didn't move anything.

I'm only 6'1" and did it from the drivers side of the truck - did not move anything. Ya' got to bend your arms in un-natural positions but it can be done. Good luck , Thomas

P. S. I did use a spare tire/rim to stand on ( laying flat on the ground next to the truck ) - it is real stable and gives an additional 10 inches of reach.

Go in from the top, it might seem like a long stretch but I was able to do it without removing the filter housing.

I knelt on the valve cover (put a towel or something on it to cushion your knees), move the oil dipstick tube, and have at it. Do like Justin suggested, get a set of shorty wrenches first!

Took about 20 minutes, but I had the advantage of watching it done before I tackled it myself.

Thanks for the help.

Went in from top, drivers side, 2 bolts and 2 hose clamps off a 5 gallon pail and i removed the filter housing. Then I had the pump in the good light. If i had the parts on the bench waiting to go in, woulda been a 1 hr. job, trip to cummins made it a short day. No biggie! After reading the Dodge shop book on replacing lift pumps I started to feel sorry for the by the book guys. (removing the starter???) Thank you all
