Was a cool night in Wisconsin last night 40-45 degrees, and I noticed the Intake Air Heater cycling on and off. What surprised me was the duration that it was on, only 2 second intervals. Hardly seems effective with that short an interval. Any idea if this is normal? I've always thought my truck had bad cold start emmisions, this could be the reason why!

Thanks for the help.

No thats normal.

It preheats for its duration before you start, depending on temp. it will stay on for upto what seems like around 30 seconds? While running it cycles. It is a very big draw on your electrical system.

What Kat said

I followed the advice of another TDR member (Ddressler) and wired LED's to both grid heaters. Interesting to watch. Like Kat stated, at key on (wait to start) both are on. The duration will depend on how cold the ambient air is. After the wait to start light goes out, both are off. Once you start the engine, they cycle between each other for approx. 2 sec. cycles, with a small delay between. If you drive and keep the MPH below 18 or so, they will alternate with no delay ( one is always on) until you surpass 18-20 MPH or after approx. 3 minutes. Probably more than you ever wanted to know about the grid heaters ;) .
