I just ordered a BHAF (2790) air filter and also ordered a outerwears cover. I am trying to figure out how I am going to install it. Is there a way to remount the airflow sensor onto the stock airtube or do I need to buy an aftermarket intake tube. If so, which brand will work with the BHAF and also allow me to reinstall the sensor.

I am not so worried about reinstalling the filter minder although it might be nice If I could figure out how to put that back into the mix as well.

Any help, ideas, pictures, and especially "how to" instuctions would be greatly appreciated!

I have ran the search on this site and although I found many threads concerning BHAF, I didnt find much help on selecting an intake tube to go with it and reinstalling the sensor.

thanks,

Billy

check my RR, I built a elbow out of scrap piece 4" exhuast pipe, and mounted the sensor on that. Used the stock intake tubes. I did gut the "torque tube". Put a Outerwears on it and no complaints.

Outerwears $30

BHAF $35

and a free piece of exhaust, little time on the welder and free flowing intake for under $100.

How about the "cool blue" intake tube then fit your filter in where you want it and fabricate 4" pipe to mate the two and then in that connector piece you could put the sensor but the minder might go better in the filter end if you can drill the filter without damaging it.

here is how i have my sensor put back in the piping...

[yeah, the zipties are mickey mouse, but they are just there as a backup. the hole is undersized and the little lump in the sensor is through the rubber and is very secure]

Did you use any kind of sealant to make it air tight at the sensor? I really like your set up because there isnt any welding involved. I could probably live with the zip ties.

Thanks for all the info guys. I think that I may end up just trying to get a premade intake tube like the Kore for a few reasons as follows.
I dont have a welder and couldnt make one like Jcrockets.
If I bought the cool blue tube I still would have to fab some more stuff to make the sensor work so I would be right where I am just installing the BHAF on my stock tube.

I gutted the stock tube this evening. I read somewhere on here about how to remove the cross piece without cutting anything by prying apart the lip on top and then just pulling the guts out. I miss read this and got myself in all kinds of trouble. I was under the impression that it was just kind of pressed in or snapped in. It was glued in and after I took it apart and removed the guts I had to figure out how to get this sucker back together and have a truck to drive to work tomorrow. Anyway I had to glue it back together with super glue in order to get it to set fast because I didnt have time to let it sit on a shelf with RTV for the next day or two.
I did use RTV sealant all around the edges of the lip inside and out to make sure it was air tight and also to keep it together after the super glue gets brittle and cracks up.
This is only a temp fix now as i dont trust this tube anymore. I am thinking about replacing this piece with a piece of 4" exhaust pipe tomorrow and using the stock elbows.
I really wished I had just cut out that cross piece like others have.

BTW I also removed the white wings in the bottom elbow.

So JC,

You're intaking hot air from under the hood?

Not any worse that half the aftermarket intakes out there that sell for $400+. Plus it is not an oil based filter like AFE, K&N :) I am not a fan of any of those types of filters, had bad experiece with them in the past. I like the paper elements, and nothing breaths like a BHAF. ;)

Just my opinion though.

nope. the hole i drilled through the rubber elbow is undersized a bit. the sensor when pushed through stretches the rubber and there is a little bump on the sensor that once it goes through, it will not easially pop back out. i am 99% sure it would stay in place with no tiewraps, but they are there for that 1% chance it isn't going to stay

Cricket,

Thanks for the response... You do make a good point... Anyone ever seen any flow charts comparing different filters?

Update on my BHAF

Ok I installed my BHAF. Its probably alittle bit too backyard for most of you guys but I dont weld so I was limited on what I could do without having someone else do it.
The 90 is made out of ABS from home depot and is only 3". The OD on the collar of a 3" ABS is exactly 4" and would fit with the rest. ABS pipe is measure ID and therefore 4" would not fit into any of my existing couplings. the AFE torque tube is 4" OD and the couplings with it are 4"ID.
I am hoping this smaller 90 isnt going to create too much of a bottle neck in the whole system.
Mounting the sensor was easy enough. I used a 1 1/2 inch ABS cap which I then cut down to approx. size the original base was. I cut in an arch as best as I could so that it would fit snug against the round 90. I then used some heavy sand paper and another piece of round ABS and sanded the cap where I had cut until it was smooth and really fit good against the 90. I then drilled 1/2 inch hole in the top of the cap for the sensor as well as a 1/2 inch hole in the 90. I also drilled some tiny holes for the mounting screws of the sensor into the cap.
I mounted my new sensor base onto the 90 using some gas/oil resistant "seal all". once it dried a bit I added more all around it creating a air tight bead.
Once it dried I mounted the sensor and screws and out alittle RTV sealant in the screw holes to keep those air tight as well. The screws dont go into the 90, just the top of the cap.
Eventually I will probably order a exhaust pipe 90 online and figure out how to mount the sensor in that so that the whole system is 4".
