i just saw that tst sells a fleetguard intake kit setup for the 12 valve cummins. i see that it is really reasonably priced compared to other intakes. does anyone know if this system is approved to filter the air really good while providing optimal air flow. does anyone use this system now with good results. i have a k&n and i keep hearing horror stories about their filters on these engines

im ordering one for a friends 02 ho and havent heard anything bad obout them but that does get the wheels turning and make ya wonder

Are you talking about the big one or the drop-in replacement?

The BHAF (big honkin air filter) doesn't flow as good as a aFe pro guard 7 but is better than the stock setup. And you can pick that filter up at any local NAPA store or Peterbuilt/Kenworth/Freightliner store. Theres acouple posts around with the various part numbers, just run a quick search for them.

How do you know this? I believe the BHAF flows better than the aFe Proguard 7, but not the standard cone aFe.

And speaking of BHAFs they are not created equal. The Fleetguard version flows more than the ones you get from NAPA, WIX, etc.

I remember somebody (I believe Joe Donnelley) stating that they made the most power with the AFE over any other intake. Not sure bout' flow, but I do remember that. And I thought the pro-guard 7 flows better than the regular cone AFE? I do agree, though, that all BHAF's are not equal. I say stick to Fleetguard if ya can!

Joe D. 's test was using the megacannon from aFe. I don't believe the PG7 was out then. And he compaired it vs. an KN RE880. In that test the aFe gave a gain of 5hp. Rod Snaith also says in that post where ,Joe D. posts his results, that "As of 6 months ago, aFe was rating their 40044 and 40043 filters at . 6% less filtration efficiency than the stock paper filter element. I had the exact numbers from Fleetguard and aFe here at one time, but can't seem to track them down right now. 98. 2% and 97. 6% seems to ring a bell though. "

aFe says on their product brochure (and it can be taken for what its worth) that the PG7 flows 820 CFM (@1. 5" H2O). The nearest BHAF results I could fine was 450 CFM (@2" H2O).

ok thanks guys i ordered mine yesterday from tst. after i ordered it i found out there is a cummins distributer that sells the bhaf even cheaper than tst does. i can't wait for it to come in so i can have one of those ridiculous cones on my engine.

We dynod a truck with a bhaf then installed an AFE there was an 8 hp increase at the wheels The truck never moved from the dyno for the change over, same day same dyno, same outside air temps... ... ..... enough said. :D

Its certainly not a cost efficent amount if you figure only a 8hp gain for all most 220 dollars more than the BHAF... ... ... ... ... . Andy

You are referring to the tests in my article that appeared in TDR #37, p. 26. I later tested the Pro Guard 7 filter on my 97 at 712 hp and it was the same hp as with the 4 ply AFE filter. I have used AFE ever since and have the Pro Guard 7 with pre-filter "sock" on the 2004.

Amen Hammer... thats the point i was trying to make before. . some ppl just have too much $ tho heh. .

no offense now :)
