Intercooler Boot

On a 2004 what are the intercooler boots made out of? My friend has a bone stock 2004 and the boot thats comes off of the turbo itself is unraviling the stitching and coming apart, is there an aftermarket one that will hold up any better than the stock one? The other three boost are made out of the same matrial as my 96 12v and they look fine.

That should be covered under warrenty unless your friend has already been BOMBing majorly! :-laf

Yes they will have it replaced under warranty, but will the next one do the same thing the truck only has around 10,000 miles on it and it is bone stock with an automatic trans, the compliant he has is after about 50 mph the truck seems to flatten out and no more power and the fuel milage has dropped 4 mpg and the dealership scanned the truck and said all is fine. GO FIGURE!!

The fuel mileage loss is probably because of the boost leak caused by his bad intercooler boot. I will say I have never heard of them wearing out this quick on a stock truck. I had to replace one on my original 97 after 18?K miles and then I've already had to do one on my new to me 97 with just 146K miles. Very weird, but both were the same way. The boot had deterioated (sp) and was causing a small leak that wasn't noticeable driving, but was when it hurt mileage! Both times it was a 2 to 4 mpg difference on both trucks.



Maybe it was just one bad boot, get it replaced and if it happens again then look into aftermarket boots.

Boost gauge should tip you off to this pretty quick.



I just pulled my hose running into intercooler when I put the twins in; it was frayed and shabby looking but wasn't leaking. Didn't look like it'd hold up too much longer though. Kind of flimsy.



It's a 3" dia intercooler hose. Note the length and stop by a big rig truck parts shop and they'll have one or get you one. You can get some better clamps too. Don't bother with the dealer IMO.

Boost gauge should tip you off to this pretty quick.

With all due respsect big MAK, I also thought that the boost gauge would tell you about something in respect to my above mentioned problems. However it did not show any sign of problem. Was still able to make 40psi of boost on the 1st truck and 30psi on the 2nd (2nd is less BOMBed).



However once I changed the same boot on both trucks (pass. side @ the intercooler) the mileage came back! I don't know how or why, but all I cared about was getting my mileage back. Oo.

Good point. To make the same power; same boost; you'd have to be running more RPM to make up the for loss; thus lowering mileage.
