I am looking into a purchase of an intercooler for a Ford/Cummins conversion using a '93 first generation, (yeah I know this might/ should be in the conversion section). I'm looking for information that might help me to decide if I should use a stock type intercooler (93 style or maybe 94 or up 'cause I hear they are larger) or is it worthwhile spending the bigger bucks going with an aftermarket such as the high dollar Banks stuff.

I called up Banks today and got quoted $1500 for the aftercooler setup. This was for (at their recommendation) a Ford application and not the Dodge. I didn't know whether to laugh or pass out.

I have the option of an intercooler from a 96 Dodge (used of course) for $200. I also have an option of one out of a Powerstroke Ford (factory) for the same price, and it is about 2" deep. Quite a bit larger than the Dodge stocker.

Is there a major improvement when switching to the aftermarket item? Horsepower? Cooler EGT's?

Dennis,

I am not sure what to tell you on which intercooler to use, but if you want a better price on Banks, get a hold of Big Don. If this was my project, I would go with the biggest one possible. Also, have you looked to see which one will fit in the conversion truck the best? Good Luck!

I can't comment on the difference between intercoolers as my truck didn't have one before the Banks kit. However, I would go with one that is for the Ford. I would think it is easier to change pipe positions than to fab the intercooler to fit. I'm not sure if Big Don is still working with Banks or not but I got mine for almost half of your quote.

Dennis:

I had a piece of metal (BIG piece)that was hit by another vehicle come thru my radiator and intercooler while traveling down the freeway one day. BAD DAY! Anyway,I purchased the BANKS intercooler only, as I had all the plumbing already. I think I paid about $200. 00 more than what DODGE wanted for a factory replacement intercooler. I did notice a very small (2lbs. maybe)increase in boost but that was about the only difference. The BANKS did bolt right in as the stock one did but in your case I don't know if that would be a consideration or not.

Bottom line, I don't think the BANKS is worth the extra money over a stock intercooler. I would go with whatever would fit in the best/easiest and still do the job.
