Is there any difference between a 12valve and 24valve intercooler? I found one for a very cheap price? Is there any thing to gain by switching to the 24valve intercooler? Will it bolt up to my 96 chummins truck, with out any modification?

I have heard that the 24v intercooler is a little more efficient and is worth about -75 degree egt. The 12v and 24v are not the same. As far as I know it will bolt up fine.

I noticed about a 50-100° drop in EGT's... . but this isn't 100% precise as my gauge went south just after the install.

I got in a wreck and the ins. company gave me $895 towards a new IC... . so in went the ISB IC.

It bolts right up... . fits in the hole a bit snugger, though... :D

It's a HUGE pain in the butt to install with the radiator still in the truck. I had to do my condensor too... . so the bumper was already off..... It was fun to say the least... hehe

Matt - A bad day working on the truck is better than the best day at work.

I think i might have scored a 24 valve intercooler, and the price is very good. When i get ready to install it, will the a/c lines going to the a/c condenser have to be disconnected, or will it swing out of the way far enough to get the intercooler out and the new one back in? Does the front bumper have to taken off to perform this delicate procedure?:p

My front bumper was off to replace it with a full front replacement setup..... and I had to change out my condensor as well... . so they were both out of the way.....

The condensor will NOT move out of the way enough to get it out... . I tried like heck... no dice.

It's a HUGE pain in the butt..... but worth it if you can get a 24-V IC cheap enough.

Matt,

Didn't I read somewhere that you kept the radiator in the truck when you swapped intercoolers? I still can't figure out how you did that, you must have more patience than me. Maybe that's why you couldn't keep the condensor in tact, though.

I've removed my IC for cleaning and didn't have to disconnect the condensor. Heck, I even pulled and rebuilt my engine without disconnecting the condensor. I pulled the AC compressor off the engine and left the entire AC system on the truck.

So yes, nfox, it can be done, at least on my truck. Maybe other's are different though.

Yes, the radiator was still in the truck... . with hoses intact. I had to literally lift it up about 8 inches using two huge screwdrivers and prying it up just so it would clear the inlet/outlet necks on the IC.

I tried like heck to get the condensor to move out of the way to take out the IC, but it just wouldn't clear. It wasn't a big deal since I had to pull the condensor anyhow... . but I wanted to see if it could be done.

I did everything from the front..... I'm almost getting the impression that some people are doing the swap from the back to avoid removing the bumper/etc. ??

24v Intercooler

Is there any difference in height or width on a 24v intercooler? Does anybody have a part # off a 24v intercooler? Talked to a salvage yard and they said the intercoolers are exactly the same, and the part # is the same, i can't believe that? Anybody that has switched there intercooler, please chime in.

24V intercooler is about 1. 5" taller than the 12-valve counterpart... . I got mine from Piers... . so I don't know the DC part# for either one. I do know that the 12-valve IC is $895 from DC (retail) and that Piers has the 24-valve for MUCH less than that.

The parts yard says they are the same because either one will bolt in and work just the same as each other. Their parts search computers rule out minor differences like this... . they figure if it bolts up and operates... . it's good enough for them. The only dimension that is different is the height and # of tubes in the IC itself. Either one will fit in the same hole and work just fine... .
