2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Intercoolers

I was wondering if the stock intercooler is the same for all second gen trucks, or if there is a difference between 12 and 24 valves.

Rebuilt many trucks with used parts here and never came across one yet that wont interchange and I dont mark them when I take them out of trucks that I part out.

In 2nd gen trucks the 24 valve intercooler is about a inch taller. If I remember right it has one less row of tubes than a 12 valve intercooler, but has a intricate cooling fin setup that provides more surface area. Also, the 12 valve intercoolers were painted which acts as insulation.



From what I could tell on my 98 12 valve truck, swapping in the 24 valve intercooler made about a 25 to 50 degree EGT reduction.

Somewhere during the 2nd gen trucks the core size changed. According to the Duralite catalogue the core size was 35 13/16" x 15 5/8" with 3 3/4" connections on the "ealier" 2nd gens. The "later" 2nd gen ones were 35 113/16" x 16 9/16" with 3 1/2" connections. Shadrach
