I am down to 1/8 of a tank of DEF on the Def gauge and trying to plan out my summer in terms of when should I add DEF.

I found some 1/2 gallon containers of def for sale on EBay that are VW/Audi/Mercedes brand.
I messaged one of these EBay marketers to inquire if there was a date code or legible manufacture date on the bottles so I would know how close to expiry the DEF they are selling is. The seller responded that the bottles were not at his/her location to look at. So I have decided just to buy gallon containers from the local auto supply store. But will probably wait a few weeks or month to do so.

The ebay bottles were a bit more expensive..... understandably so because they allow you the flexibility to add small amounts of DEF at a time which is a luxury in these hot summer months. I was planning on buying 3 bottles of 1/2 gallon size def portions and putting one bottle in the truck, & throwing 2 of these bottles in the freezer.

The attached article from Ford is interesting and gives me more info on DEF than I previously knew.

I didn't know that in very cold climates DEF shelf life can be extended to 36 months. I didn't know that in hot environments, shelf life can be as short as 2 months. Although since even desert temps can cool down at night, the shortest def life you would see in the US would be 6 months.

I never worry about DEF life in the winter even tough I live in sunny Miami Florida because average winter temps are in the high 60's.
But I really hesitate to put 2.5 gallons in the tank in June because I just finished a 2000 mile summer trip, and will not be using the truck much this summer.

That's why the 1/2 gallon bottles were so appealing.

I also didn’t know that the DEF system adjusts itself depending on the quality of DEF in the tank. The attached document says that if the def system detects partially degraded DEF, it just squirts more DEF into the exhaust stream. Unless DEF is of such low quality that it just gives you an error message. That would be when the system detects it can't compensate for low quality def.

Might this be why some are seeing higher DEF consumption periodically?

I have decided to go with 1 gallon bottles for the summer from my local auto store even though those 2.5 gallon and 1/2 gallon bottles have nice drip free spouts. I did find a 1 gallon def bottle reusable tube/cap/dispenser that I bought for $6 on ebay so I am less likely to make a ness on my truck with a spill.

I personally think you're waaaaaaaay over analyzing this.

Just buy a 2.5 gallon jug (with the handy spout) and pour in a gallon or so, then put the jug in your basement, crawlspace, or closet.

I've ran through 150.698 gallons of DEF in about 16 months, so turnover / shelf life has never been an issue for me.

When your 2.5 gallon jug gets empty----buy some at the pump and save even more money. All of my DEF refills have been bulk, at the pump, with the exception of about 5 or 6 2.5 gallon jugs.

It really is only a concern for those who live in hot climates and don't drive alot.

Probably over analyzed, but in no hurry to add DEF.

The issue I have is a persistant check engine light even after a 2000 mile June trip.

My wife is asking when I'm going to take the truck in to get the CEL turned off. According to the diesel techs on this site, you have to add DEF to get the truck to go though all it's system analysis.

I guess that's my dilemma and why I was over analyzing.

it is good to know that the system is able to adjust for partly degraded DEF. That info had never been posted here to my knowledge and may explain why some see faster DEF usage than others.

There are no bulk DEF dealers near where I live. So I buy bottles.

it won't damage anything, but am conscious of avoiding the hassle of draining the DEF tank.

This is good info for people who can use it. Some places like Las Vegas, NV don't cool down at night. To the posters above - you got to worry about it freezing more than short DEF life.

Least I don't have to shovel "heat". :D

I'm on my first summer with DEF here in AZ, where it's still 104 degrees at 10:00 at night. My pool is 95 degrees right now, so I'm sure my DEF tank on the truck is even hotter, since it's not 18,000 gallons like my pool. ;) I'm just letting it run all the way down, and just adding a 2.5 gallon bottle at a time.

That's why I shared it. Thought it was good info about how the DEF SCR system uses more DEF when it detects low quality. Just means there is less likelyhood of having to drain the tank (inconvenient) because it uses it faster, to a point. Always leave some space in the tank to add fresh DEF and your system will keep using it instead of giving you an error message and spontaneously derating.

Frozen def will thaw. And actually might have extended life. Don't think that is the biggest concern. The info about temps and DEF life is better than the global statement that "DEF has a shelf life of 2 years +/- a couple of months." 6 months shelf life is a far cry from 2 years.

Does AZ get hotter in August? August and September are the hottest months in Miami.

I just added 1 gallon yesterday. The gauge says 3/8 full, but it is really only 1/4 full. Won't be using it alot this summer.

August gets more humid, and the temp normally is up a few degrees. We've had "August" type weather in June though.

Mingoglia, how did things work out this summer with your DEF. I just purchased a 2016 2500 a week ago. Last night at about 7:00 PM I scanned my def tank under the truck. It was 104 degrees. Yesterday the max temp was in the mid 90s. I think engine and pavement heat will raise def temps more than we think.

Something else for Phoenix people to think about is garaging a truck at night in the summer. When our lows are 90 my garage is still 100 in the morning. The garage traps all the engine heat from the vehicles and never cools off.

Oh gosh, stop thinking so much about this DEF Stuff, just use it, fill it up at the next truck stop and be fine.
In Europe we use the AdBlue since Ten Years now, with absolutely no Problems at all, let it freez, no problem, let it boil in summer, no problem - stop thinking so much about it.
This stuff is no rocket science.

Someone who filled up in Georgia at a truck stop got a dose of supersaturated DEF which was not covered under warrantee and did thousands of dollars worth of damage to the DEF system. It's not rocket science. But there will be a few posts on it. My worksite bought a Ram gasser which i think was a good move because it sits idle most of the year. If it had a diesel/DEF system, the def would surely go bad in the hot weather down here. It would take them 3-5 years to go through a 2.5 bottle of DEF. I think it was good they bought the gas model

I am a Freightliner/Detroit Diesel trainer. When I started teaching the class in 2010, I bought DEF for my training engine and testing samples. Last month (October 2015) my class tested this same DEF that I purchased 5 years ago and it still has shows 32.5 % as it did when I got it. Yes, they told us it has a shelf life, but I have yet to see any problems with aging. Keep the lid on the container so it doesn't evaporate and you should be fine. I also have a sample that I have frozen and thawed probably 36 times and it still checks as new.

I am just to drive it until it is somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2, pull into a Wally World DEF station and dump a 2.5 gal box of Blue DEF in it and continue on my way. WWs are everywhere! Shopping cart might even have an empty Blue DEF box in it as I leave the parking lot. SNOKING

Thanks for posting!

If people only knew how FEW problems DEF actually gives they wouldn't think twice. It's new and everybody is concerned over nothing.

Why not buy the Wally World brand, it's on $7.85 for a 2.5gal. bottle, where as the Blue DEF is $19.85 Close out price.
(that price was on line)
