While perusing the forums over at The Diesel Stop i saw an intersting diesel survey in the general questions forum. I'm not smart enough to post a link to it maybe one of you can. What jumped out at me was the number of manual transmission owners by brand. They broke down as follows G. M 4. 7%. Ford 15. 8%. Dodge 40. 6%. You decide what the numbers mean but that is a very significant difference.

I have always assumed that more people buy the Dodge manual because it's considered one of the finest most long-lasting heavy duty transmissions available. The Ford and GM offerings, on the other hand, are not so wonderful. I don't know how accurate that is, but it's like I say that's what I've been lead to believe.

Dodge autos have a pretty bad rep. they have to fight. Their not bad transmissions just have weak areas that when fixed correctly make them a better transmission. Unfortunately it's not in just the HD transmissions but in the light duty (dakotas/durangos) ones also and they've had the bad rep. for awhile.

I've had alot of experience with the ZF tansmissions used in the Ford and GM trucks. While not as good as the NV5600 they are not bad trannies. I think it more shows the type of buyer between the brands.

Part of it is the Cummins. It works best with the manual and clutch set -up.

Chevy has the worst rep for trans according to a reporting company.

If I was to pull a load %50 of the time I would have to have the 6 speed. My opinion of course.

As far as newer model Fords and Chevys go, I've never seen one with a manual transmission. On the older body style Fords, I don't think I've ever seen an automatic - go figure.

I believe those numbers reflect production. From what I've seen, Dodge offers far more manual transmissions than the other two. I've never heard of a Duramax being coupled to a manual transmission, and if my memory serves me right, it wasn't even an option when the motor was first introduced.

We have three company DXs here with 6 spds. They are REALLY poor at getting a loaded 8 horse or a loaded gooseneck flatbed started. But once they are cruising they do okay. The primary operators and I think the CTDs do a much better job out-of-the-blocks. But then again, they are CTD owners so they may be somewhat biased. :-laf

There are quite a few Chevys around here. I know of one that has a six speed. He's a farmer and that truck is worked every day. Go Figure

Chebbies use the NV4500 also. Don't know about the 5600 but I imagine if they have the 6 speed, its a 5600.

I. m not qute sure that is correct. I believe both Ford and GM use the zf six speed transmission.
