Interesting find while changing my oil

My drain plug was just a little more than hand tight... #@$%!



I ran my oil about 6000 miles. I am meticulous when it comes to torquing things and I know I torqued to 40lb/ft. I am using one of Geno's plugs (9/16" w/magnetic tip). I always make sure the plug is clean and so is the area under the pan.



Any ideas or is this just an anomoly???

I have the same plug, never had it come loose though. What I do is I place a bead of silicone on both sides of the washer to stop leaks and any possibility of the plug coming loose. You can reuse the washers/seals and reuse the silicone just pull the plug out of the application nipple each time you want to use it. This works great never have to worry about leaks, seal replacements or the ultimate: plug extraction.

I went through the same thing. What I think happend is when the gasket was new, it compressed over time, so when the next oil change was due, the plug was almost hand tight.



The bad thing, when I did the oil change again with the Geno's plug, this time the gasket was compressed, I torqued it to 35 Lbs. Well I could not remove the plug during the next oil change. The socket rounded the six-point on the plug. It got ugly for awhile until I got a chissle and hammer to loosen the plug.



So after buying a new plug I torqued it to 40 lbs. The next oil change, sure enough the plug was hand tight again. So after the brake-in on the gasket, I only torque it to 20 lbs. And after each oil change the plug is tight and I can remove it with no problems.
