I had an interesting incident at a local restaurant this afternoon. I was sitting in a booth. A couple of booths down from me was a group of 4. There was a lady who Im guessing was in her 30's, a couple maybe about my age (Im 66) and a little old lady.
When they got up to leave, the old lady was first out of the booth and was in front of the others as they came towards my table. She was using a cane and was pretty shaky. When she got close to my table, the old lady looked at me and said "Im a retired marine and Im leading my troops". So I told her that Im an ex marine myself. She got a twinkle in her eye and reached over to shake my hand. As we shook hands, I told her "semper fi marine". That gave her an even brighter twinkle and a bigger smile on her face. She answered back "semper fi".
She then leaned in a little closer and said she had been a major. She was in WWII and korea. She is 93 years old. I told her I was in vietnam.
As she left and walked out of the restaurant it seemed like she stood a little straighter and walked with a little more dignity. I think I really made her day.
