I changed my oil in September with the usual Amsoil DME 15w-40 and Donaldson Blue DBL7349.

Getting home from elk hunting I noticed a little oil on the outside of the filter, so I assumed I didn't get it tight enough. I went to tighten it and it wasn't loose. So I started looking into it further. I noticed that there wasn't any leaked oil on the top of the filter, just the side.

It appears that I managed to push some oil past the crimp from the cap to the wall of the filter. That's a first, for any filter!!! It wasn't much oil, but enough that I changed it. I didn't add any makeup oil changing the filter and the level on the dipstick is down less than .25". I had 1800 miles on the oil.

All appears good now, but I’ll monitor it a little closer for the next 1500 miles.

I will be returning the failing DBL7349 and the other one I have with the same date code. I will still run the DBL7349 without hesitation.

Just an interesting observation.

Whats the date code? i have a dozen of these filters on hand. are you sending to donaldson for review?
Cold weather starts? think the relief/bypass valve quit?

It was a October 19, 2019 build.

I was surprised that Donaldson told me to deal with the selling dealer. They didn’t seem to care much beyond that. This was all via email thou, which I’m sure isn’t their A team. I plan to call this week since I have photos now.

Yes there were plenty of cold, but not COLD, starts.

No way to know on the cold oil pressure relief valve as there hasn’t been a real oil pressure gauge in these trucks for 20 years. The thought did cross my mind, which is why I’ll monitor it for the next few weeks. I started it this morning colder than any weather on the previous filter and it’s fine.

Stuff happens. Just winterized a customer’s boat and found the same issue with a Sierra marine filter. Was weeping at the crimp. He had maybe 1/2 a qt of oil under the engine after a full summer of use. Filter was tight gasket was dry but can had a trace of oil running down the side.

All things made by man can have issues. If I never bought anything again for minor issues I wouldn't own anything.

I still believe Cummins makes the best engine for a pickup, and Donaldson makes the best oil filter for that engine.

I’ve spun thousands of filters- Donaldson included. Never saw a defect like that. It’s times like this that I HATE our fictitious OP gauges

Looking for high oil pressure from a stuck shut relief valve blowing the oil filter up?

The engine locking up is the least of our concerns if the oil filter completely blows out. If I am pulling the 5er up the Mogollon Rim that much pressurized hot oil blowing out is likely going to catch fire on the red hot exhaust and turbo.
