I see Drydene trucks here in eastern PA. , 500-1000 gal tanks. Looks like they do commercial and fleet stuff. Don't see any in the small jugs.

Thanks for the info. It seems like Castrol "took them off the shelf". I drove by their plant in White Marsh, Maryland on my way to the JCB plant when they were there(several years ago).

Exactly what are the advantages of the CI4 over the CJ4? I have some oil refinery connections that I may be able to get some info from. Thanks.

I've been emailing back and forth with a Tech at Valvoline/Ashland. I've been informed that the Classic CI4+ is still available, but the NAPA stores just have to order it. I've called six stores, the Cummins dealership, and an oil distributor I didn't even know existed until this week. I believe I have enough information from the Tech that NAPA should be able to get the oil for me.

My question is: What is the shelf life of oil in a sealed 5 gallon bucket? 55 gallon drum?

I believe the reason the availability is so low is because most owners just pull into a quick lube and tell'em to change the oil.

Royal Purple

Where are all the Royal Purple peeps?.

Im in So cal and can buy Royal Purple CI4+ oil for days with no problems. The funny thing is the dodge dealer carries Mopar CI4+ non synth for $7. 50 a quart:rolleyes:.

Why not just buy the Royal Purple and be done with it. I get 13 quarts for $75. 00 bones. Changing it around 4K/4 Months seems more than reasonable to me:D.

I get it at TMC Performance in Bellflower, they always have allot of it.

Mac:cool:

The part # for the 5gal at Valvoline is 591839 My NAPA store gets it for me.

Thanks for the reply, but you apparently missed my question concerning the shelf life of motor oil in a sealed container. I have the part number and am working with my local NAPA already, as mentioned. Finding this oil and someone who actually understands the difference in the oils and their associated ratings is like chasing a fart in the wind.

Most of the posts that I've found have stated that this oil is good for 3-5 years on the shelf, with a few members saying it should last up to 10 years, if not more. Anyone else care to chime in? The reason I'm asking is I would like to have a good idea how long it lasts so I can figure out how much I'm going to buy.

As far as Royal Purple is concerned... No, thank you.

Tough to "catch up" somebody on the differences.
Simply stated, the Fed regs for the '07 and later engines required removal of some
beneficial additives in the CI4.

Of course the oil companies are going to say CJ is just as good as CI -
do you think they would "badmouth" their own product?

Yes, CJ is "backwards compatible" - but that doesn't mean it's *better* than CI.
(Do your research here and in numerous TDR issues, and on the Bob the Oil guy site - been beat to death!)
Depends on preference and what you choose to believe . . . . and run in your engine.

Back to the OP - West Coast Valvoline went "dry" on CI-4 a *LONG* long time ago!
(No matter what the link shows)

How to tell for sure? Just look at the "donut" with the oil usage specs.
If it has CJ on there - some of the previous additives that were in CI have been removed.
~~

But - maybe some hope (just not Valvoline).
I found CI-4+ Chevron (Dello 400) in 5 gallon pails at a local Cummins repair shop
while trying to track down some Valvoline Premium Class Blue CI4.

The counter guy claimed that Chevron was (or might be) again producing CI4 for their
commercial users.

He had a bunch of the 5 gallon CI pails in back - as well as a big display of cases of gallon size Dello 400 *LE* when you walked in the door.
(Note: The display was "LE" which is CJ oil).

I'm probably due to check there again.

Bottom line - IMO if you can get the CI-4 for your pre-DPF engine - great!
If not - pick whichever "Plan B" works for you.

Found!! My NAPA has found out how to get the CI-4+ VPB for me. It's $15/gal in a 55 gal. drum or $19/gal in the 5 gallon pail.

How long will this stuff last in the pail/drum?

That's a bit high for arround here. I pay about $12 per gal for off road Delo CI-4

IMO - you don't need to worry about shelf life -

but, be sure to check and double check if you expect the VPB to

be the former CI-4+ *without* CJ rating.

(I heard that song and dance several times - wrong each time).

Valvoline calls the CJ the same thing!

Thanks for the reply. I have explicitly told them that if it has CJ anywhere, I don't want it. I believe they got the message, especially after what hoops they've had to jump through, but if it still shows up with CJ on the side, I'll let them keep the oil.

I also am not enjoying the search for anything CI4+ in my town. Found a gallon of old amsoil 15w40 CI4+ at the local napa, but wasn't willing to pay $33 for one gallon...

Amsoil is continuing to manufacture 15W-40 CI-4+ oil in the Heavy duty Diesel & Marine 100% synthetic. They have just introduced a 100% synthetic "Premium" API 15W-40 CJ-4 oil, which they are saying it will extend oil life up to 3X. They are recommending Extended drain intervals up to 3 times OEM recomendation in Diesel Engines not to exceed 50,000 miles or 1 year whichever comes first. This oil is not recommended for extended drain intervals if the Engine is modified or when using bio-fuels containing >5% Bio-Diesel (B5).

This is a totaly new formulation from the CJ-4 they previously introduced, and uses new technology in base stock and additives, which have not been used before.

As the percentage of biodiesel to ulsd rises, the percentage of particulate matter/soot drops.

Why are extended oci's not recommended?

Well I put Delo LE in my two marine B150's that I normally run around 100 hrs between changes on the oil. The new LE was removed at 85 hours and never got dirty like the CI4+. My consensus was that it was not suspending the crud to take it to the filter or be pumped out at the next oil change, because of a lack of detergent!

My local NAPA's and Chevron Distributor have 5 gal pails of CI4+, but are charging a lot for it. SNOKING

lower Ash,etc. to work on the new emmisions trucks... Apparently the new formulas are / foster a different overall acidity that the old engines were used to...

Not sure what to use now... was thinking synthetic, but just bought new Valvolene premium blue for my next oil change on the 12v.

Hey, has anyone tried the new oil in the pails? Maybe we could just reach in and pull the "J" out??? :-laf

I know Atwoods (farm supply store) is a regional store, but my local store seems to have a consistent supply of CI4+ in their store branded 5-gallons pails for about $55.
