On my 92 W250 i got a starting issue .

Some times it will start fine some times not .

no click no nothing . I cut the wires from the clutch interlock switch

as it came loose once , and by passed still pluged into the stock plug ,

My next thing to try is to cut out the plug all to gether and loop it .

Does any one else have a idea ? I dont think its the starter as it swings fine

but any other ideas are appreciated Thanks

check all of your grounds & check your battery connections
if yours is like mine there is like 20 wires bolted onto the positive clamp make sure thats all tight & clean
take care

Test Time

Yes it is a pain. Time for the meter and schematic. 12V batt to starter is always there (a full 12. 5 ) when the key is turned solenoid is energized and contacts in the starter allow 12V to spin gear which is thrown out to flywheel.

Electrical, I always check fuses first for blown or discolored, only takes a minute. On the schematic, you can see the exact flow of power. Start at the battery and work your way thru the system, thank God these trucks are fairly simple. Have fun. :)

circuit loaded voltage drop testing both power & ground is the best way to find resistance in a circuit

ofter an ohmmeter wont catch a problem that the this will

so you would run a volt meter paralell with the circuit & load it (in this case try to start it with one lead on the battery & the other on the small starter wire)

Id say if you are over . 5V across that circuit there is definatly a problem

you then work the ends toward each other till you find the problem or problems

you can do the same test on the ground side too

good luck

Try a new starter relay. Its the middle one of the three mounted on the drivers side inner wheel well.

Its just a standard 5 pin relay.

Philip is probably rite

you can also thump the relay while in the crank position & if it immediatly cranks thats it

hey there Philip :)

have a great week

I jumped arount the interlock now but im still chicken to shut it off .

So i bought a starter relay were in the heck is it at ? On my truck

on the driverside , is the battery a circut breaker for trailer brakes ,

and 3 identical relays all with the same number . ( all black with square plug multispade )

I bought one from Napa thats bare metal with a 4 or 5 spade retectangle connector , none that look like the one i bought is there any idea were its at

my ruck MFD is 8-91

PLEASE HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!!

If all 3 are relays on the driverside its the middel one

then i must have a ******* truck then as the 3 on my truck

all have the same numbers and dont look like the one i bought along with the plug .

the 3 i got are black and square the one i bought from Napa is metal and rectangle shape . Any got any ideas ? the plugs even look the same

The one from NAPA will be for a 1989/1990. It will not work. You need the BOSCH black plastic like you see there amoung the three mounted on the inner fender well. I believe they are all the same. Just get one of them. Like for the A/C clutch.

Then test the circuit with a jumper wire at the relay. When the starter solenoid goes, it will work and then not. After you check everything up to that plastic relay and have power there (signal power! not battery terminal power) send power to the starter. If it turns then it is the relay. if it don't, the problem is the starter or starter solenoid.

Hey, does anyone have a schematic of a common relay and that would tell him which terminal does what.

No?

I can post up a decsription of the terminals and which one does what... ... ... ... ... .....

I know someone out there will write this is the hard way, but I'm going to help this guy out my way... .....

The following is taken from MY 1992 truck starter relay. Bosch 5 pin.

term 86 ign switch (power only with key at the crank position. If your clutch switch or "N" start switch is bad, this will not have power)

term 30 is battery positive

term 87 solenoid terminal(power to the load)

term 85 ground for relay (signal circuit ground for relay)

tern 87a not be used in this application from what my notes say... ... .

If you know how the relay works (circuit) then you can troubleshoot. If you don't you don't.

A test light can be used in most situations in this case.

by=pas the entire start simply by jumping power over from 30 with key on, to term 86. This will send power to term 87 and power will pass through relay to the starter solenoid.

If I mesed this up, your in bad shape. Sorry.

If you have NAPA part SR21 it is for the 1989-90 trks

The factory Dodge relays look different than the replacement ones. On the factory relay the sides of the relay casing come down to cover the terminals and the plug.

On most replacement relays, the terminals are exposed, like in Philips link. If the terminals are in the same positions, it will work.

I got a relay to day at Schucks /Oriley auto parts , napa was

a week out . It cost $30. 00 , good things trucks are not sold by individule part cost it be over a $100K .

But any how what they sold me as well as what Napa had pictured .

Was two relays mounted on a single metal tab about 2 " apart .

I have not tried it yet , it was Dark 30 when i got home tonite .

Does this sound like the right set up ? Napa number if i renember correctly is a AR19 ??????

SR19 not AR. And no. That is not it. No go.

NAPA does not list a starting relay for a 1992/1993 diesel truck. They do, however have the A/C clutch relay. From what I recall, they are all the same. That is, them three relays there in a cluster.

If those three relays are the same, take one of the others and try it in that postion, I have the same situation going on and mine is a 95. If it does not start first thing, second or third try nothing. I re-clutch, and off the key and it will start generaly.

back to Philips problem!!!!!!!!!!

On the starter relays that Greenleaf talks about not all 3 are the same well not in the plugs any how .

The first one has a diffrent plug and wont plug into the others .

The other two will plug into each other .

I installed the relay and no luck it still sometimes wont start .

Today i unpluged the relays and pluged all 3 in and nothing .

wiggeled the wires and nothing .

So i got in the tool box in the back and gragged a nasty claw hammer in it

I found and smacked the starter and the top sylnoid area and it started .

So Is it time for a set of starter contacts now ?

This nickel and dime crap is a pain in the T^%$* all the time .

If some body has a crew cab pu or quad cab4x4 with a blown engine

for cheap or on time payments let me know its time to rebuild this

old girl into something i can trust as the body is about shot and is the suspention and frame .
