heres the story:

got home this afternoon and noticed the exhaust out the stacks was a hazy white...

didnt think too much of it...

went to leave about 2 hrs later and got down to the end of the street and turned the corner and it bellowed white/blue smoke. i turned around and went back home and checked the turbo. .

clean in the intake side. checked for loose connections and turned the box to 0. fired it back up and left again.

got to the store and it started to bellow white/blue smoke with a strong smell of oil. it cleared up a bit and shut the truck off. went inside and shopped. came back out to leave and it puffed white/blue smoke all the way out of the parking lot. i got out on the road and nailed it. smoke levels were normal and no simtoms of a miss or lack of power.

pulled in the driveway and let the cooldown timer take over. stood there and watched the truck. no smoke that i could tell.

i rechecked for oil at the air horn this time. clean.

pulled the downpipe loose. nothing but a soot coating.

pulled the egt probe. just sooted.

im at a loss... is it the turbo seals on the exhaust side?

how can i verify?

i dont believe the box is causing the smoke issue because it smells like oil. could it leak just enough to create the smoke and burn off before i can find it.

i checked the impeller. theres a small, barley felt, play up and down. i cant really feel any play forward or back.

id like to try and diag this tommorrow. any helpful hints are appricated. .

To me, it sounds like a head gasket. Water makes white smoke, oil makes blue. A busted up head gasket would cause both. Check your coolant level and check the oil for chocolate milk.

Start with the basic things, air filter clean, fuel filter, then MAP sensor and IAT sensor. If these last two are dirty they can send the wrong readings which could affect the timing. Usually, the smoke you describe is caused by the timing being off, and since the engine is electronically controlled it relies on readings from these sensors. Good luck.

no coolant mix in the oil. . not on the dipstick. and no oil in the coolant. . at least not in the bottle. .

I too am having the same problem. I put back in stock injectors and it stopped a lot but it still smokes a little bit. I do have 4 leaky connector tubes so that may also be part of the porblem. Monday i am going to get new connectors tubes and see what that does. It smokes the same way with or without the comp on, just that with the comp on it smokes black when lugging it. Also i just had the head o-ringed and studded with a . 020" over marine headgasket put on.

drove the truck for about 60 miles today. stop and go and traffic. started with box on 0 and increased to 6. nothin... im not getting the white/blue smoke anymore... ? wondering if the vp is going out...

*UPDATE* no problems till tonight. . sat in the drive thru waiting on my food. left there and cruised down the road. didnt even hit it hard. turned right at the next light and went up the street. stopped at the next light and waiting for it to change and something caught my eye. . the light turned green and started to turn left and the white/blue smoke appeared. . i looked at all my guages and no bad signs noticed. finished turning left and rolled in it a bit. the white smoke went away and went back to normal black smoke. drove it for 30 minutes trying to duplicate it. . no luck. . box was on 5x5.

i just wish if it was the vp. it would die already so i can get on with life. . this is driving me crazy.

Check the manifold for cracks...

I should also add that white smoke can be a fueling issue... not just coolant. My dad's manifold cracked and caused similar things to happen...

I should have new connector tubes on saturday and put my jammer 3s back in the stock ones suck!!! hope this helps if not its time for valve seals i think ??

I'd say when it's all said and done it will be a VP44 injection pump, thats the way mine acted before i replaced it. . I hope not.....

**UPDATE**

it did it again this weekend. . after hot soak. . started puffing white/blue smoke. it eventually quit. . but man. . im going to trya nad look for codes. . but im not going to get my hopes up. . ive shut the box off, as it didnt start this until 4 days after install. . i wish i could do something to verify its the pump. . id order a fed ex and be done with it. irp's coming and need to get fixed before we go!!

hey guys pulled my down pipe away from the turbo today and had a thick residue of oil, so i pulled the turbo off the exhaust manifold had no oil residue at all. thank god!!!! i am going to send the turbo back to the manufacture to go thru it. don't know if its a seal or what. he said to box it up and ship it back to him. the downfall is ill be without a truck for about a week. when i find out whats up ill let you know

update... it did it again today. . i installed a set of 150 injectors and juice turned off. . did it after about 15 min of driving and was pulling up a slight grade thru a intersection. ive removed the juice. but something tells me its a vp. i checked the inlet side of the turbo, no oil and clean. could it be leaking on the exhaust side? of course im sure it would leak all the time.

kelly was yours smoking all the time? or just intermit?

CEpp it smoked all the time, its the turbo !! oil went in the turbo :D and went out the down pip and out the stacks  will give river city turbo a call on monday to see whats up with the turbo.

what brand of 150 sticks did you put in ?

got the sticks from new era diesel... . it started smoking again after ip install... . GRRRRR. . and it started smoking badly today... checking turbo... will report back

Im having the same thing happening to me but I have oil coming out of #6 exhaust manifold port :{ :{ :{

Am thinking bad seals or valve guides and or cracked head or head gasket

ive found it was oil. . and the exhaust probe was covered... checked leakdown on sunday night and everything checked ok. swapping out valve seals tonight or tommorrow night. i am going to pull off the exhaust manifold to see which cylinder is the cuplrit!!
