I have a 99 Ram 2500 with a 5. 9 Cummins. The vehicle exhibits a loss of power with no throttle response with codes P0216 and P1689 occurring simaltaneously. LP pressure maintains approximately 17 psi at idle and 15 psi under all loads. The lift pumps, I have added a Carter P4601 powered through a relay, cycle for about two seconds. However, the fuel pump cycle before cranking is intermittant. If I momentarily crank the engine they cycle for 25 to 35 seconds, and I can actuate them through the CCD bus with a scan tool connected. I have already replaced the VP-44 once in December 2003 but that was for an internal fuel leakage problem but no driveability concerns. From what I can surmise I have a failing injector pump but I hate to fork out the cash for a new one until I can be positive that the problem is absolutely the VP-44. Is there any way of accessing the proprietary information in the Cummins ECM via the CCD bus using a generic scan tool? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

First, welcome to the TDR.

Have you checked your MAP sensor out at all? I`m not much on 24valves, but I`ve heard that sensor can cause a good bit of problems. Probably cheaper than a vp44. .

As for the ECM data, theres an italian guy here named Marco that does a lotta crazy things with the ecm's... Try PrivateMessaging him about it. .

Good luck

I've scanned the input sensors with a Snap-On MT2500 however the data return was pretty limited and I'd like to find out if I can access the Cummins ECM generically rather than trying to round up one of their prorietary tools. In lieu of that I'm going to check that map out more closely with a DSO and see if it glitches. Thanks for your input. I'm rather new to using forums, could you direct me as to how to Private Message Marco regarding my ECM. Again many thanks for responding.

To send a PM, go up top to the "Discussion Forums" silver button. It will popup, then goto 'User Control Panel'. On the middle left of that page you will see the Private Message commands available. Click 'Send Message' and for the username, put in "Marco" . without the quotes of course. I dont roam the 24v forum much, I think he's still active here. Might want to try posting the same message in the 24v forum, someone might have some insight, not everyone looks in here. .

good luck
