Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Intermittant rattle in engine bay?

I am hearing an intermittant tin like rattle in the engine bay but the motor running makes it hard to pinpoint, any Ideas?

Where from specificly? The plastic shroud under the windshield / wipers, behind the hood can come loose and rattle on the windshield. From the driver seat it sounds like its coming from the turbo area (if loose on the pasenger side). Mine rattled off and on all the time below probly 40MPH

Might make sure that the exhaust is not touching anywhere or for that matter even close to something.

Its comming from the front of engine positive it's not exhaust piping and it isn't comming from the back near the wippers and cowl. Sounds like the front of the engine? It's not loud and hard to tell where it's comming from amd it doesn't have any pattern to it. The sound is hard to locate over the good rattle

Check the idler pully. When mine started going south, it began ratteling intermittently. Not expensive and an easy repair.

Checked every thing I could during an oil change, including taking the idler pully off and inspecting it, and it was tight and spun smoothly. Could it still be bad? Wasn't anything I could find that was wrong that could be making the rattle, Soo... any more suggestions, also theres only 62,000 on the clock. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

You sure it's just not a loose nut behind the wheel ?

Check your A/C compressor. Does it make the sound when the A/C is off or on? If it makes the noise when the compressor is off, it could be the pulley idler bearing or if it makes the noise when the compressor is on, it could be the front bearing in the compressor. Or it could be the compressor clutch rattling...

No Dean, both my Nuts are fine and tight , and thanks Bill I'll try some experimentation and try to distinguish some difference. Still lookin for suggestoins, thanks.

Bad update: Replaced tensioner pully and no difference still a rattle So then I took the belt off and started the truck and the rattle stopped, but unless I can figure out a way to drive w/out accesories and power steering and cooling then I still have a problem.



Still a rattle and it isn't from the tensioner,

Could it be the fixed pully next to it , it still spins free,

or maybe some how the a/c: the a/c on or off is no different

what else, need help?

GEE, I just *LOVE* these long-distance guessing games - sorta like playing pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey - and at the end, we get to see who was closest...



Since for the time being, it LOOKS like it is associated with the accessory hardware - perhaps the alternator bracket or securing bolt... Been some problems where the bolts holding the fan to the hub were loose...

I'll go check that Gary, and try to see if anything else seems loose, any other suggestions as I go to the barn ...

Went and checked the fan and pully and noticed the water pump is making a not so smooth sound when you spin it by hand, so I imagine that it is the noise I hear at Idle. How hard is the water pump to change and is it under the 7/70 or the 5/100? The truck has 62,000 miles and if it's not then I can use the money from the belt tensioner that I'm taking back because it wasn't the problem. By the was CarQuest carries a Dayco just like the OEM (made by Dayco) for about 85-90 bucks for future reference.



Any Ideas on the water pump?
