1998 Diesel with an intermittant stalling problem [ this has been going on for 5-6 years] . Truck would run fine for 5-6 months then stall unexpectlly - then restart and run fine. Replaced IP relief to tank ... . no better ... replaced lift pump ... . made it worse ... . remove tank ... . found a tear in screen below suction line and a small piece of plastic between screen and suction hoze ????? where the plastic came from is unclear at this point ... ... ... ..... I haven't put everything back together yet , so I'd better not be hi-five-n and back-slappen just yet , but sure seeeeeeeeeeeems to be a good possibility that this was my problem ... .

Just a stupid thought, but it solved my 2007's "stalling" problem.

I figured out that the ignition will turn itself to the off position if you have even a modest bunch of keys on the same ring as the ignition key and hit a sharp bump or pothole. I dont know if it applies to your older one, but it scared the crap out of me on my 07 and just a completely off the wall thought popped in my head about the keys and sure enough, with the key in the on position, any light downward pull on the key ring will turn the engine off.
