Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Wanting to do more

It has to be the APB. On the way to work this morning, the truck wasn't itself, and the red light wasn't coming on for the APB. Then, as I am goosing it on the snow trying to figure out the problem, the APB light comes on and my truck starts heading sideways for a snow pile! Guess it works now! I changed nothing, so it has to be a loose connection with the APB, or the APB boost fooler. So, for now I am waiting for a call back from Blue Chip.

*on edit* Blue Chip thinks it is the screw on the Pump Cover. Hopefully that that will solve the problem.

Lost Power

I went through the same process as everyone else (replace, clean/ground, replace) to find out that it would keep coming back at a later time. Then I found that one of my batteries was arcing internally and causing my problem. This problem seems more prevalent in the colder months. I replaced both batteries with Red Optima's for about $200 (Costco) and fixed my problem. Hope this helps someone. It is a PIA to find and fix.

I'm having the same problem in my 99 with throttle response but getting a throttle position sensor code and the check engine light on. Mine cuts in and out and doesn't die completely. I can let off the pedal and start over and it seems ok for a few seconds. Only does it when it's cold. Is it my APPS? I hope so.

Thanks,

Greg Davis

Loss of Power

I have replaced a APPS, MAP Sensor, added a filter which fixed my transmission searching, and cleaned and greased all connectors, disconected the batteries and depressed the go pedal, and the problem (intermitent loss of power) still came back.

When a battery is low or going south the alternator is charging harder. The alternator will produce more electrical noise (spikes) when it is requires maximum power charge to a low battery.

The Optima batteries did fix my problem. Before replacing and cleaning everything under the hood (like me), check the condition of you batteries.

Just a thought!

Well my 02' is having the same problem. I did the APPS reset thing and now I get white smoke for the first few minutes of run time. :( Anybody have a clue why?It didn't do that before the reset that I have ever seen. (only had it a week). So,anyway that didn't fix it but I was crawling around under it last night and saw one of my intercooler boots had a 1in. split in it were it was rubbing the fender sheetmetal. So I am hoping that is the problem. Any ideas?

Apps

Well this is probably the first time that this 99 24v junk has had some power. The one mech at cummins in FMM AB did a APPS reset (3X's key throttle cycle) it only lasts until the engine is shut off although. Does anyone have any ideas??? He did try his power upgrade and when he shut it off and put mine back on and the rev's but no power was back. I tried to reset the APPs and no go. Then tried it again yesterday and it had power. BUT :{ it still has the thumping and misfire as usual and bucks below 1500 rpm. SUCH junk! He told me that this is out of the power band of the engine. How much power does it take to run at 30 mph on a flat road in town????? it certainly isn't working hard when the bucking is going on??? I use to run my Celica with a 2. 2 liter engine in 5 th gear all the time and never had a problem not even a bad clutch. SO I can't accept this being out of power band especilly because of the bad misfiring at idle. If this was the case a bulldozer would be useless! Go for ***** power.

2nd time... I had some simaler problems. Terriable pedal response, basicly on or off. When it was on it would slowly gain rpms, but once I reached a speed that cruise control could be set, the truck would accelerate fine with the accel button for cruise. Sometimes after swaping parts or moving wires it would rev up great in the garage, but by the time I got it on the road, back to the same old issues. I tried apps, map, new batteries, clean grounds, ect. I ended up being the engine control computer. My dealer was trying to help me fix it over the phone for 3 weeks, finaly I brought it in and after 8 hours diagnosis time he got it fixed with the help from the star tech line.

Anyway... long story longer, maybe check the ecm. I pinned out all 48 (estimate) pins going to it and all my wires were fine and everything measured out fine, so you might need to actually replace it to know.

Loss Of Throttle

My friend just got a 2002 cummins 6-speed and going down the interstate at 75 mph we came to hill with the cruise set and started to lose speed so he hit the diesel peddle and nothing was happening, we pulled over and shut the truck off for 30 seconds started it back up and all was well again it did 4 more times on the way home shut the truck off and restart it and then it was fine, no check engine light, how do you check for codes?

Turn the key on and off without starting 3 times and watch where the odometer is for the codes. IT should say something like PCM..... then the codes , if any, then "done" , then it goes to ECM..... codes if any and then "done" . Write down the codes and report back.

My truck about 3 weeks ago did the exact same thing with the 0216 ( injection pump timing failure code ) It was like the 4th time I have gotten the 0216 code and the dealer finally replaced the Injection pump. :)

Loss of throttle

Thanks alot git-r-done thats what i didn't want ot hear about maybe another bad vp-44, time will tell.

Apps

Sorry Weidner need the or would very much like the long version of your story if you can. If you would please e-mail me. Have been bothering with this since new. Have had the ECM replaced and that only lightened my wallet $2500. 00 ++ and didn't fix the junk!!!!!!!! Today went to town today and when I the started the truck it would go back to the rev but no power had trouble to get the apps to reset and it runs very rough at idle as usual and gutless as *)%#+&@!!. Yesterday when it did have power at one point it went through 3 stages of power bursts it was very nice ( does anyone have any ideas on these 3 stages ?) With the reset of the apps it has power but still idles rough and bucks below 1500 rpm. All in favor of the _ _ _ yellow engine for power.

Nfox, your buddy's and Billy Diesel with the 216 code are pretty much the poster child for the VP going south. next he'll probably start to have a dead pedal and blue smoke on cold takeoffs. then he's walking. it may take some time for the 216 code to show up but when it does you only have a few weeks, if that, left.

Bad news for you and me. Same problems. I've been checking on this and dealing(driving)with it for way to long. Here are all of my symptoms, you compare:White/blue smoke at start up, rough idle before I put it in gear (auto), started dead pedal at 65-70 mph, I would have to pull off or let it down shift to around 50mph and or pump pedal. Then figured out that I could let off throttle, turn key off then on and go again without losing to much speed. Smoke is getting worse on startup, and throttle goes more frequently(i'm probably messing something else up) responds like electrical but I'm being led to the conclusion that its time to bite the bullet and get a new IP. Anybody has any suggestions, email me. -- email address removed -- or -- email address removed --. WNC area. I did the Apps reset, grounds, etc... All help welcome.

I am in the same boat but my problem started after I replaced a vp44 that died on me along with a new lift pump. So I believe mine can't be the new vp-44. Where is a good place to get an APPS?
