Occasionally my check gauges light comes on with a chime sound and the oil pressure gauge is zeroed. I shut it down and restart and all is normal. Any ideas??? I am sure I am not losing oil pressure, possibly gauge or ECM problem? Has anyone encountered this problem before?

The gauge is a fake and the sending unit evidently just a switch. It could be the sending unit, the data bus, the ECU, the cluster, the cluster controller, or it needs an exorcism.

I would validate the oil prssure is good with a manual gauge then decide what to do from there.

DONT be sure that you are not losing OP unless you have verified it against a manual guage. You can buy one from miller or just a pod mounted guage as I did. I was (and still am) having the same issues you are having but mine occurs at start-up. I installed the guage and sure enough, the idiot light wasnt fooling me; there was no OP.

The sending units are known to become faulty at times... but never assume this as it is the HEART of your Cummins!

Cerb, I think mine needs an exorcism! First, i'll swap the OP (easiest) then, if that doesnt work... drop the pan :( not looking forward to that!

Don't drop the pan till after you have pulled the cooler and are 100% sure all the controls are good

The manual gauge verifies the accuracy of the "idiot light", not only that, I had the IC changed when my lights horn and windshield wipers went crazy on me! That didnt address any issues, besides, i only pay attention to the manual gauge now.

I pulled the valves out of the OC, verified spring height and smooth valve movement, all checked out good. I thought about just replacing it, at the cost of $80 its worth trying just to avoid pulling the front of the motor for the OP or dropping the pan for the pick-up.
