Just bought a 95 with 480,000 miles on it. Lots of power most of the time. sometimes little power. exhaust pipe broken off in front of the catastrophic converter when I bought it, ran fine in the mountains (7500 feet). When I took it down the hill, it ran fine until the first shut off, then no power. Took it home, lots of power the next day, replaced fuel filter. No power the next day, the next day lots of power. ???any advice appreciated.

Could be two things. Overflow valve has weak spring or not seating properly. Best to replace the whole valve. Easy job. Other thing, could be your lift pump going bad. Bad overflow valve and bad lift pump both give similar symptoms. Since it's intermittent I think more likely it's the valve.

Only thing I can add to Dieselnerd's post is at 480,000 miles you might as well replace them both and be done with it.

GFreshour,

I think it is along the lines of turbo wastegate opening up and not closing(letting exhaust by-pass turbo) or blockage in fuel system.

Turbo wastegate could be sticking open when you hit max boost(18-20 lbs. ) I don't think it could be the boost (pressure) line coming out of intake manifold and going to wastegate solenoid.

But you could check both line solenoid and rod out easily enough.

I think gate could stick open off/on if solenoid was going bad.

I would have to research though.

Being a intermittent problem, if componenets of fuel system invovled I would think blockage. The filter on bottom of fuel tank model has plugged up on some members trucks. Also the prefilter can get plugged up. Mite be dirt in injector pump.

I quess the question should be when is power loss most noticealbe? RPMs? Speeds?

If wastegate was sticking open low and midrange RPMs would be affected with loss of power.
