Hello,

I have a 1995, 2500, 2WD Cummins (252,000 miles) and I have been having an intermittent start problem. Sometimes when trying to start the engine, I get all my lights, everything comes up, but not even a click. The dealer kept it for almost two weeks, was able to duplicate the problem twice in two weeks, but cannot find the problem. All they could think to do was change the ignition switch, but that has not gotten rid of the problem.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Sounds like starter contacts. Search "starter contacts" and look for Larry B. He sells a kit that includes all parts needed for about 30. 00 or 40. 00 bucks. An easy do it yourself project. Hardest part is getting the starter off.

I'm surprised the dealer didn't want to sell you a NEW starter for about $350. 00... ...

Last week I had the same problem before i went to school. Came back in the afternoon with a bunch of tools read to tear into the problem. However the truck fired right up, couldn't understand it. I looked at Larry's so i think i will be ordering some parts soon before it happens again.

Had same problem with my trk at 80,000 mi. Dealer said needed new starter, 600 bucks. Called Larry B. bought kit one hour later problem solved. Now at 170,000 mi later still working just fine. Call Larry B.

DH,

If you have not changed the PITA fuel lines with marine grade ones yet, now would be the time. It is eaiser? with the starter removed.

Larry has the Fuel Solinoid relays to. These can give similar problems. Only $20. 00 bucks. I changed mine and all my starter woes are gone. DC wants way more than $20 for theirs. Heck pick up a extra for a rainy day or to bail out a friend. And take crabmans advice and get the marine grade lines from Larry. If you've never replaced them then your 95 is due. I've already done my 94 twice in 10 years. These can look good and show no leaks but can draw air and plaque your performance. Just my humble advice.

Perfect time for this thread!

Yesterday I got in my truck at work and tried to crank and all it did was click. I tried one or two more times and it cranked.

Last night it did the same thing. then this morning, I got in and it cranked for like 1/2 second then stopped. So I tried again and it went. Does this sound like the contacts or the ignition switch?

Also, should the lines on a 98 be replaced with marine lines?

pwerwagn,

Yes, it sounds as if your contacts are going. I would replace them as soon as possible before they cause $$ damage.

I would only use the marine grade fuel hose as the wall thickness is 3x that of normal fuel line. You will have to use large clamps too.
