I have my originals still.
I can't speak about pistons. Once in a real blue moon I see them seize, usually they'll leak first. The slides on the other hand will lock up, but they'll only cause a decent drag, not bad enough to cause a wheel fire. Dealing with the salt trucks I work on, we'll toss calipers every few years, but every summer we overdose the boots and pins with caliper lube to keep the liquid out. I've seen one year old pins get corroded even still.
Every few years, I'll pull and lube the pins in mine as well. I consider it maintenance. I use an acid brush to get in there with.
