Internal Jake-Brake?

Has anyone installed an Internal Jake-brake? If so, which one?





I like the exhaust brake but the internal version has about twice the breaking force, I'm pretty sure.

The cummins can not have an internal j-brake. The head is completely different.

there is no compression release brake avalable for any of the small cummins engines [b & c] just the exhaust restriction ones... now, it wouldn't be all that hard to make one work on the b, but space is limited between the head and the cowel of the truck. but if you had the skill and the money and the fabrication tools, you could make a system to hydraucally actuate the exhaust valves say 0. 050" to release the compression just before tdc on compresson. but that might cost more in the end that what the price of a b-series engine is

Besides the obvious issues in fabricating an engine brake, if you need more braking than the exhaust brake and service brakes provide, you are likely way beyond the trucks capabilities anyway. In the past I have made many trips through the mountains, a few times at 26k gross. I was able to safely do this without any extra braking. The exhaust brake will be a nice addition allowing a little better speed downhill without fear of the service brakes overheating. I expect it will be more than enough additional braking force.

Yeah, but ... if a true engine brake was available, 1-2-3 stage brake that is, would you want one? (of course you would) and would you abuse it (i. e. making noise all over town and at every light)?

Fatcat: You better believe we would be jake braking the town at night with straight pipes on our CTD's. I have a Jacobs on my 05 CTD 3500 4x4, and it's straight piped. It doesn't sound as loud as I would like, but it's more that enough because the cops haven't figured out that I'm using the exhaust brake right in front of them.
